OSKALOOSA — Six forfeits powered the Newton girls wrestling team to a 42-19 road win over Oskaloosa on Thursday.
The Indians led the dual 12-0, but Julianna Maldonado-Hidalgo’s pin at 120 pounds kickstarted the Cardinals’ rally.
Alivia Conley (125), Jeralys Casanova (130), Heather Hanson (155), Grace Guy (170), Ella Machin (190) and Ashlyn Van Manen (235) all accepted forfeits at their weights.
Newton was 1-3 in contested matches, had a 6-1 advantage in forfeits and there were three double forfeits.
The Cardinals did not have the services of senior Stella Cupples or Kylee Adams, who is ranked second in Class 2A at 105.
