Bonus points power Newton boys to win over Oskaloosa

Two technical falls the difference in Cardinals’ road victory over Indians

OSKALOOSA — The Newton boys wrestling team started fast and finished strong against Oskaloosa on Thursday night.

The Cardinals had advantages in both contested wins and forfeit victories, scored bonus points in every win and defeated the Indians, 46-34, in Little Hawkeye Conference action.

Newton opened the dual with a forfeit win from J’Kwon Williamson at 113 pounds and scored a win by forfeit from Kent Montgomery to end the dual at 106.

In between was a bit of a back-and-forth affair. The Cardinals led 17-6 and trailed 24-17 before rallying with a 29-10 finish.

Both teams posted four pins in the conference matchup. The other two contested victories for Newton were dominating technical falls. Oskaloosa also got a win by major decision.

Abel Aldama scored a win by pin at 120 before Kaiden Rogers and Aiden Robson (12-6) won 16-0 and 15-0 at 132 and 157, respectively.

Lane Rozendaal (8-2) scored a 35-second pin at 165, Trevor Manka had a first-period pin at 190 and Coleby Revell (6-2) won by fall early in the second at 285.

Montgomery, who is ranked fourth in Class 3A at 106, is now 14-0 and Williamson made his season debut on varsity at 113.
