State-ranked Hawks use big first half to down Eagles

Kate Harthoorn

KEOTA — Kate Harthoorn posted a double-double, five players scored at least seven points and the Class 1A No. 13 Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team cruised past Keota on Dec. 20.

The Hawks dominated three of the four quarters during the South Iowa Cedar League contest. They led the Eagles 30-9 at halftime and won the fourth quarter 20-7.

Keota won the third 23-6, but L-S forced 27 Eagle turnovers and out-rebounded its hosts 41-23.

“Our defense was pretty good in the first half,” L-S head girls basketball coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We did a good job of rotating and keeping a hand up on the ball. We started slow on offense but got it rolling a little in the first half.”

Breah Lowry

Harthoorn finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals to lead the Hawks, while Isabelle Vos added 10 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Breah Lowry contributed nine points, four rebounds, two assists, four steals and two blocks, Tatum Huyser pitched in nine points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals and Ava Brummel tallied seven points and seven boards.

Alaina Roberts registered three points, four rebounds and three steals, Brooke Harthoorn collected three points and two steals and Brilynn Tice had two rebounds and four assists.

The Hawks (6-3, 5-2 in the SICL) shot 42 percent from the floor, made 5-of-15 from 3-point range and hit 13-of-33 from the free-throw line. They committed 22 turnovers.

“Our third quarter was not good on either end of the floor,” Hulsing said. “We had too many turnovers and missed shots that led to easy baskets for them. The girls responded in the fourth quarter to push our lead out again.”

The Eagles (2-6, 1-4) got 13 points each from Cameron Haifley and Emily Conger. Keota shot 28.6 percent from the floor, made 4-of-13 from 3 and connected on 11-of-24 from the foul line.

The Hawks are 23-1 against Keota since 2007 and the win on Dec. 20 was the team’s 22nd straight in the series.
