BROOKLYN — Cameyon James’ double-double off the bench led the Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team to a 64-35 win over BMG on Dec. 17.
The Hawks led by seven after one quarter, doubled up that lead at halftime and outscored the Bears 32-17 in the second half of the South Iowa Cedar League contest.
“We were more disruptive on defense tonight,” L-S head boys basketball coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We were able to create a few more deflections and turnovers, which resulted in some easy baskets.”
James led L-S with 10 points and 10 rebounds and the Hawks dominated the boards, 42-23, against the host Bears.
Connor Deal finished with 13 points and two rebounds, Will Van Vark added 11 points and two steals and Dawson James collected nine points, five rebounds and two assists.
Carson Maston grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked two shots, Sawyer Veldhuizen chipped in six points, two rebounds and three assists and Jack Bowlin finished with four points, five rebounds and two assists
Hendrick Lowry dished out three assists and swiped two steals, Will Conover scored four points and Michael Spooner put in three points.
The Hawks (4-3, 3-3 in the SICL) shot 42 percent from the floor, connected on 8-of-28 from 3-point range and made 8-of-12 from the free-throw line. They also committed only 10 turnovers.
“BGM made it difficult to get the ball inside, but the guys kept working to get some quality looks at the basket,” Harthoorn said.
BGM was led by Tucker Wright’s six points, four rebounds, six assists and five steals.
The Bears (2-7, 0-6) shot 22.4 percent from the floor, made 3-of-19 from 3 and hit 10-of-14 from the foul line.
L-S has won nine straight in the series and improved to 31-5 against BGM since 2006.
Keota 51, Lynnville-Sully 49
KEOTA — The Hawks rallied from a small deficit after one to take a lead into halftime but couldn’t maintain their advantage on the road during a 51-49 loss to Keota on Dec. 20.
Lynnville-Sully trailed by two after one but outscored the Eagles 11-4 in the second. Keota won the second half 29-22 though.
“After the first quarter, we played some pretty tough defense,” Harthoorn said. “Hopefully we can keep bringing that effort and execution on that end of the floor. It was a game that could have gone either way. We will work to learn from this experience and get stronger together.”
The Hawks out-rebounded the Eagles 37-29, but the hosts made one more shot from 3 and had one more make from the foul line.
Veldhuizen led L-S with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists, Van Vark chipped in 10 points, six boards and four assists and Maston tallied seven points, four rebounds and two assists.
Bowlin put in seven points and grabbed five boards, Dawson James added five points and six rebounds and Lowry pulled down two boards.
Cameyon James finished with three points and three boards and Deal had three points and two boards.
The Hawks shot 34 percent from the floor, made 6-of-24 from 3 connected on 7-of-13 from the foul line. They committed 12 turnovers.
The Eagles connected on 36 percent of their shots from the floor, made 7-of-20 from 3 and buried 8-of-15 from the foul line. They also committed only seven turnovers.
Chase Haifley led Keota with 21 points, while Billie Kindred had 11 points and nine rebounds.
L-S is 21-10 against Keota since 2006, but the Eagles have won two straight and four of the past six in the series.
