PELLA — Kent Montgomery remained unbeaten and dominated a state-ranked wrestler in the finals and Lane Rozendaal and Coleby Revell lost only to state-ranked grapplers as the Newton wrestling team placed sixth at the Bill Van Horn Invitational on Saturday.
The Cardinals scored 117 points with 10 wrestlers in the 16-team field. Newton edged conference rivals Oskaloosa (115) and host Pella (112) for sixth.
Cedar Rapids Xavier won the tournament with 188.5 points. Marshalltown (181), Fairfield (151), North Mahaska (147.5) and Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln (134) completed the top five. Boone (90) and Davis County (82) were ninth and 10th, respectively.
Class 3A No. 4 Montgomery (13-0) won the 106 bracket with a 3-0 day. He registered two pins and defeated 2A No. 4 Dylan Williamson of Van Meter, 13-5, in the finals.
Rozendaal (7-2) and Revell (5-2) both were second at their weights. Rozendaal was 3-1 with three first-period falls at 157 and Revell was 3-1 with three pins at 285.
Rozendaal’s only loss came against 2A No. 4 Cason Miller of Fairfield and Revell suffered a loss to 2A No. 7 Regan Roberts of Knoxville.
Abel Aldama and Trevor Manka were fifth at 113 and 190, respectively, and Aiden Robson finished seventh at 144. Nick Milburn took eighth at 215.
Aldama was 3-2 with two wins by decision at 113. One of his two losses came against 2A No. 1 Cael McCabe of Fairfield. Manka was 2-2 with two pins at 190.
Robson (11-6) finished 3-2 at 144 and one of his two losses came against 1A No. 5 Ryan Groom of North Mahaska.
Milburn won twice at 215. One of his three losses was a 6-5 decision against Pella’s Carter Van Kley in the seventh-place match. Sebastian Sorenson also scored a win by pin at 138.
The Cardinals entered the fewest number of wrestlers among the teams in the top eight. Boone scored 90 points and placed ninth with five grapplers.
