Newly-ranked Hawks edged by 2A No. 2 North Mahaska

L-S girls battle to the wire against Warhawks

SULLY — The Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team made more 3-pointers, scored more points from the free-throw line and turned the ball over just as many times as North Mahaska during their South Iowa Cedar League game on Friday.

But the Class 2A No. 2 Warhawks were just a little better from the floor and had a better night on the glass during a 59-53 road win.

“I’m so proud of how hard the girls played tonight,” Lynnville-Sully head girls basketball coach Jerry Hulsing said. “Our defense was pretty good. I liked how we rotated a couple of times. We were just a half-step slow. We need to rebound better. We gave up too many second-chance points.”

Lynnville-Sully shot 35.7 percent from the floor and made 18-of-26 from the free-throw line, but North Mahaska stayed unbeaten because of its 36-24 advantage on the boards. The Warhawks grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, too.

North Mahaska improved to 22-18 against L-S since 2016. It has won 11 of the past 12 in the series though.

The 1A No. 13 Hawks led 15-14 after one quarter and outscored their visitors 15-13 in the third. But North Mahaska won the second 9-5 and pulled away with a 23-18 advantage in the fourth.

Kate Harthoorn led the Hawks with 19 points. Ava Brummel tallied 11 points and six rebounds and Breah Lowry tallied eight points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Alaina Roberts pitched in seven points, three rebounds and two assists, Tatum Huyser finished with five points, four rebounds and two assists and Isabelle Vos put in three points. Brilynn Tice grabbed two boards.

Lynnville-Sully (4-3, 2-2 in the SICL) connected on 5-of-13 from 3 and turned the ball over 25 times. North Mahaska shot 3-of-15 from 3 and committed 23 turnovers.

“Our offense was pretty good outside of a couple of stretches we went scoreless,” Hulsing said. “The girls did a good job of attacking pressure to give us some good looks.”

The Warhawks (4-0, 4-0) shot 40.7 percent from the floor and connected on 12-of-19 from the foul line.

Breckyn Schilling led everyone with 20 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three blocks and Sydney Andersen chipped in 10 points and nine boards for the Warhawks.
