A dominant day on the mat by state-ranked Kent Montgomery headlined the Newton boys wrestling team at its annual Cardinal Classic on Saturday.
Montgomery stayed unbeaten on the season, Aiden Robson collected a runner-up finish at his weight and a trio of Cardinals finished third as Newton placed fourth in its home tournament.
The Cardinals scored 113 points in fourth. Ballard won the tournament title with 220.5 points. That was 10 points better than Class 2A No. 1 Mount Vernon (210.5). Oskalooosa, which had only nine wrestlers in its lineup, was third with 141 points.
The rest of the eight-team field included Grinnell (98.5), the Waukee Northwest JV (90.5), Centerville (83.5) and the Norwalk JV (78.5).
Class 3A No. 3 Montgomery improved to 5-0 after a four-win day at 106 pounds. He won twice by fall and twice by technical fall. Both pins came in the first period and his tech falls were 17-0 and 20-3.
Robson (5-2) finished second and was 5-1 at 150. He scored four wins by pin and one by technical fall. His loss came against 2A No. 3 Mikey Ryan of Mount Vernon in the finals.
The Cardinals’ third-place finishes came from Zander Robson, Nick Milburn and Jose Benitez.
Zander Robson was 2-2 with two wins by decision at 132, Milburn (4-3) was 4-2 with three pins at 215 and Benitez won twice at 285.
Benitez scored a win by fall and a win by decision. One of his losses came against 2A No. 1 Ethan Wood of Mount Vernon.
Drew Bratland and Trevor Manka each finished fifth and Sebastian Sorenson, Zaine Robson and Kaiden Rogers all were sixth at their respective weights.
Bratland won his fifth-place match by fall at 175, Manka won twice at 190 and Zaine Robson scored two wins by pin at 144. Sorenson’s win came by technical fall.
Rogers won his first match by major decision at 126, but his day ended early due to an illness.
Indianola 70, Newton 5
INDIANOLA — State-ranked Indianola used 10 pins and two technical falls to down Newton in the season opener for both teams on Thursday.
The Indians, who are ranked eighth in the 3A tournament rankings to begin the season, went 12-1 in contested matches and defeated the Cardinals 70-5 during Little Hawkeye Conference action.
Montgomery begins the season ranked No. 3 at 106. He bumped up to 113 and got the Cardinals’ only victory, winning by 20-2 technical fall.
Indianola started the season with six ranked wrestlers, including four who are in the top five of their respective weight classes.
