Woollums headlines three Cardinals all-conference volleyball squad

Newton volleyball team excelled in classroom

Delaney Woollums

Senior Delaney Woollums ranked in the top five in the conference of a pair of hitting categories this past season and senior Chloe Swank and junior Isabelle Rawlins both set new school records on the volleyball court.

The Cardinal trio ended their seasons with all-conference recognition for their efforts.

Woollums earned first-team honors in the Little Hawkeye Conference for the first time in her career, while Swank and Rawlins were the honorable mention picks.

All-conference recognition is based on statistics inside conference play only.

Chloe Swank

Woollums ranked fourth in the league with 68 kills and her .258 kill efficiency was fifth in the conference. She also finished with 54 digs, five aces and two assists. Her serve percentage was 94.7.

Swank ranked second in the league with 107 digs and was one of four players with at least 30 attempts to not miss a single serve. She was 37-of-37 from behind the service line.

Swank finished her career with a school-record 1,086 digs. Her 5.7 digs per set this season set a new school record. Courtney Elliott set the previous record in 2000.

Rawlins took over the setter position for Newton. She ranked fourth in the LHC with 144 assists and finished with five kills, 50 digs and four aces.

Her serve percentage of 97.1 ranked in the top 10 of the conference and her 68 successful attempts ranked eighth.

Isabelle Rawlins

For the season, Rawlins had a serve percentage of 98.9, which set a new school record. Elliott also posted that record 24 years ago.

The Cardinals led the LHC with a serve percentage of 95.2 in conference play. They finished 335-of-352 and ranked third in the conference with 321 digs.

While Newton finished sixth in the conference on the court, it was very successful off the floor.

The Cardinals earned the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Distinguished in Academic Achievement Award, which goes to teams with a 3.2 grade point average or higher.

Leading the way in the classroom were Woollums and senior Lola Rivera, who both earned academic all-state honors. To be considered, players must have at least two of the three between a 3.85 or better GPA, a 27 or better ACT and/or rank in the top 10 percent of their senior class. Both Woollums and Rivera are 4.0 students.

Woollums and Rivera also were joined on the academic all-conference squad by Rawlins, Swank, seniors Macy Lampe and Addison Hook, juniors Addie Ratcliff, Sloan Brodersen and Brooklyn Sterling and sophomore Morgan Frehse. Those players had at least a GPA of 3.5.
