Hawks fall to Montezuma in postseason opener

MONTEZUMA — The Lynnville-Sully volleyball team scored at least 17 points in each of the three sets against Montezuma during its regular season conference meeting earlier this season.

But on the road in the Class 1A Region 1 opening round postseason matchup, the Bravettes were just too much for the Hawks during a 25-9, 25-11, 25-15 loss.

Montezuma dominated at the net with a 27-15 advantage in kills and had all five aces in the contest.

Kate Harthoorn led the Hawks with six assists and 20 digs. Alaina Roberts chipped in six assists and eight digs, Tatum Huyser added five kills and four digs and Jakeira Hay posted two kills and three digs.

Ava Brummel put down five kills, Penelope Robinson contributed three digs and Breah Lowry tallied two digs.

Lynnville-Sully (8-20) was 34-of-35 in serves but had a negative kill efficiency.

Montezuma was led by Sydnee Burgess’ match-high 14 kills. Chloe Snook dished out 21 assists and Addyson Probasco collected 18 digs and two aces.

The Bravettes (13-14) advanced to the regional quarterfinals to face another conference rival in Sigourney at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Sigourney. The Savages defeated Montezuma in four sets in the South Iowa Cedar League tournament on Oct. 14.
