Newton volleyball defeats Southeast Warren in road quadrangular

Cardinals fall to host Gilbert, Oskaloosa

GILBERT — The Newton volleyball team missed only five serves and produced eight aces, but the Cardinals went 1-2 in a road quadrangular on Thursday.

Newton handed Southeast Warren a 21-17, 21-17 loss, but Oskaloosa got some redemption against the Cardinals with a 21-18, 21-10 victory. Host Gilbert also defeated Newton 21-15, 21-13.

The Tigers were 3-0 on their home court, including a three-set win over Oskaloosa.

Delaney Woollums

Southeast Warren (24-19) finished 0-3. Against the Warhawks, Newton was led by Macy Lampe’s 11 kills and two digs. Delaney Woollums added six kills and six digs, Isabelle Rawlins chipped in 24 assists, three kills and two digs and Addie Ratcliff put down six kills.

Chloe Swank had 12 digs and three aces, Addison Hook contributed four digs and Sloan Brodersen pitched in three digs.

The Cardinals (12-16) were 40-of-42 in serves with five aces. Rawlins finished 8-of-8 in serves, Brodersen was 11-of-12 and Swank ended 7-of-8.

Newton had a kill efficiency of .421 with Ratcliff leading the way at .556. Woollums’ kill efficiency was .400 and Lampe’s was .318.

Lexi Clendenen led Southeast Warren with nine kills and Jessica Lillig tallied nine digs. The Warhawks were 28-of-28 in serves.

Isabelle Rawlins

Woollums led the Cardinals against Gilbert (13-15) with six kills and five digs and Rawlins had eight assists and three digs.

Swank finished with five digs and two aces, Brodersen produced three digs and Lampe and Lola Rivera both collected two digs. Ratcliff put down two kills.

The Cardinals were 25-of-27 in serves with two aces. Swank led the way at 9-of-9. Newton’s kill efficiency was .200 with Woollums finishing at .429.

Gilbert was led by Evie Christenson, who had five kills, seven digs and three aces. Katie Sniezek finished with 19 assists and three aces.

The Tigers had an 8-2 advantage in aces and a 24-8 surplus in kills.

Chloe Swank

Rawlins had 14 assists and four digs, Swank contributed 10 digs and Woollums chipped in nine kills and five digs in the loss to Oskaloosa (13-19).

Lampe added six kills and three digs and Rivera tallied two digs in the loss.

Newton was 28-of-29 in serves with Swank finishing 8-of-8. Woollums and Lampe combined for 15 of the team’s 17 kills and the team’s kill efficiency was .188. Lampe finished with a kill efficiency of .385 and Woollums ended at .273.

Notes: Newton opens Class 4A Region 6 play against Bondurant-Farrar at 7 p.m. on Oct. 22 in Bondurant. The winner faces 4A No. 11 Norwalk in the regional semifinals at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 in Norwalk. The regional final is Oct. 29.
