L-S volleyball falls in SICL Bronze Quad

Hawks can’t hold early lead against Colfax-Mingo

NEW SHARON — English Valleys doubled up the Lynnville-Sully volleyball team in kills and had a 10-3 advantage in aces during a 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 win over the Hawks in South Iowa Cedar League pool play action on Monday.

The win pushed the Bears to the SICL Silver Quad. Host North Mahaska defeated English Valleys in three sets to advance to the SICL Gold Quad.

Lynnville-Sully played Colfax-Mingo in the SICL Bronze Quad on Thursday in Colfax. The Bronze Quad only had three teams because Tri-County does not have a varsity squad this fall.

Alaina Roberts led the Hawks (8-19) against English Valleys. She finished with four assists and five digs.

Jakeira Hay put down six kills, Kate Harthoorn delivered six assists and Breah Lowry had three kills and six digs.

Ava Brummel produced three kills, Ashlan Cordes added two kills and Sevanah Routier and Terriyah Carter finished with four digs. Penelope Robinson tallied three digs.

Lynnville-Sully was 59-of-64 in serves with three aces. Harthoorn was 18-of-18, Roberts served 11-of-11 and Routier was 7-of-7.

Ava Gehrking led English Valleys (7-17) with nine kills, 10 digs and seven aces and Pantera Spies produced 15 digs.

Colfax-Mingo 3, Lynnville-Sully 1

COLFAX — The Hawks couldn’t hold an early lead against Colfax-Mingo during the final round of the SICL Bronze Quad on Thursday.

L-S grabbed the advantage over the Tigerhawks with a 26-24 win in the opening set, but Colfax-Mingo rallied for the a 25-23, 25-17, 25-13 win in the final three sets.

Hay led the Hawks with a career-high 12 kills and added six digs and three aces. Harthoorn chipped in nine assists and 10 digs and Roberts had eight assists and five digs.

Tatum Huyser returned from an injury to produce two kills, three blocks and nine digs. She hadn’t played since Sept. 23 and missed the first meeting against Colfax-Mingo on Sept. 30.

Brummel registered five kills and two digs, Lowry contributed three kills and five digs, Carter chipped in seven digs and Routier finished with two digs.

The Hawks were 67-of-78 in serves with five aces. Hay served 16-of-17, Huyser was 11-of-12, Harthoorn finished 10-of-11 and Roberts ended up 9-of-10.

Colfax-Mingo (10-12) defeated BGM 25-21, 25-22 to advance to the SICL Bronze Quad final. The Tigerhawks won the season series, 2-0, against Lynnville-Sully.

Statistics for Colfax-Mingo were unavailable at press time.

Notes: Lynnville-Sully opens Class 1A Region 1 play against SICL rival Montezuma at 7 p.m. on Oct. 21 in Montezuma. The winner faces either Sigourney or Martensdale-St. Marys in the regional quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23 in Sigourney. The regional semifinals are Oct. 28 and the regional final is Oct. 30.
