Hawks can’t find win column at Newton tournament

SULLY — Terriyah Carter registered a career-high 19 digs and Jakeira Hay added a career-best 15 digs, but the Lynnville-Sully volleyball team fell to visiting Montezuma on Monday.

The Hawks missed eight serves and posted a negative kill efficiency during a 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 loss to the Bravettes in South Iowa Cedar League play.

Hay added six kills and two aces to her career-high 15 digs, Alaina Roberts chipped in 12 digs and nine assists and Kate Harthoorn tallied 10 digs and six assists.

Penelope Robinson put down two kills and registered six digs, Ashlan Cordes added three kills and Sevanah Routier posted three digs.

The Hawks (8-16, 1-5 in the SICL) finished 44-of-52 in serves with three aces. Routier was 12-of-12 in serves, Brilynn Tice finished 6-of-6 and Hay was 9-of-10.

Sydnee Burgess led Montezuma (11-12, 4-4) with 13 kills, seven digs and three aces. Kylee Larmore added eight kills.

Hawks can’t find win column at Newton tournament

NEWTON — Lynnville-Sully faced a tough field at the Newton Cardinal Invitational on Saturday.

The Hawks lost to the host Cardinals in three sets and nearly took a set from both Boone and Davis County but went 0-5 for the day and finished sixth.

Newton defeated L-S 21-4, 19-21, 15-12 and Davis County (22-20, 21-10) and Boone (22-20, 21-8) swept the Hawks.

Class 2A No. 2 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont downed L-S 21-6, 21-10 and 5A No. 15 Ottumwa swept the Hawks 21-10, 21-7.

EBF defeated Ottumwa in three sets to win the tournament, while Newton, Boone and Davis County finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the Jasper County matchup between the Cardinals and Hawks, the hosts scored the first 14 points of the opening set. Delaney Woollums did most of the damage as she put down eight kills during that stretch.

The lead grew to 17-1, a kill by Addie Ratcliff made it 18-2 and the Cardinals finished the opening-set win with back-to-back kills by Ratliff and Isabelle Rawlins.

Lynnville-Sully began the second set with four straight points and eventually led 9-3. A tip kill by Roberts put the Hawks in front 13-6.

Newton’s attempted comeback began with a Macy Lampe kill and then back-to-back kills by Woollums trimmed the Cardinals’ margin to 15-12.

The Hawks stayed in front by three following another tip kill from Roberts. Newton got as close as 18-17, but a kill by Carter evened the match at one set apiece.

The Cardinals scored the first nine points of the third set thanks in a part to a pair of kills from Woollums.

The Hawks rallied to get within 12-11, but Newton (10-12) ended match by scoring three of the final four points. Lampe’s kill made it 14-11 before the two team’s split the final two points.

Carter had six digs and two kills, Harthoorn registered four assists and four kills and Roberts had five assists and two kills in the loss to Newton. Hay posted seven digs, Routier tallied four digs, Brooke Hardeman registered two digs and Ava Brummel put down two kills.

L-S was 35-of-35 in serves with Roberts and Carter both going 9-of-9 and Hay finishing 6-of-6.

The Hawks opened with Davis County. They were led by Hawthorn’s five assists and six digs. Brummel put down six kills, Roberts had five assists and two aces and Hay chipped in three digs and three aces.

Carter registered five digs and Cordes and Breah Lowry each had two kills. The Hawks were 25-of-29 in serves and Hay finished 9-of-10.

Davis County (6-23) got nine kills from Paylin Lawson and Hayden Humphrey added eight digs and three aces. The Mustangs served up 10 aces in the victory.

In the loss to Ottumwa (21-5), Hay led the way with two kills and four digs, Roberts and Cordes each had two kills, Harthoorn tallied two assists and Routier pitched in two digs. L-S was 13-of-16 in serves.

Brummel had four kills in the loss to state-ranked EBF. Harthoorn tallied three assists and two digs, Lowry and Hay added two digs each and Roberts delivered two assists. The Hawks were 12-of-17 in serves.

EBF (25-2) was led by Molly Shafer’s nine kills, four digs and three aces and Kate Shafer had 13 assists. The Rocket twins are both Northern Iowa recruits. Lacey Taylor had eight of EBF’s 12 aces.

In the loss to Boone, Roberts had four assists and three kills and Hay added three assists and four kills to lead the Hawks.

Sevanah Routier

Harthoorn finished with five assists and two digs, Carter tallied three digs and the Hawks were 16-of-21 in serves.

Addie Tungesvik led Boone (6-17) with 12 digs.
