L-S football drops district contest to Mount Ayr

Second-quarter deficit plagues Hawks against Raiders

MOUNT AYR — A tough second quarter doomed the Lynnville-Sully football team on Friday night.

Mount Ayr rushed for 297 yards and the defense finished with three sacks during a 38-18 home win over the Hawks in Class A District 6 action.

Lynnville-Sully scored two touchdowns of at least 95 yards but was outscored 18-6 in the second and 12-6 in the fourth.

The Hawks were limited to 53 rushing yards and Mount Ayr snagged three interceptions. The Raiders had a 16-10 advantage in first downs.

Jack Bowlin’s 95-yard receiving touchdown from Connor Deal in the first quarter cut Mount Ayr’s lead to 8-6.

But the Raiders scored 18 straight in the second to go up 24-6. Terran Gosselink closed the gap to 12 at halftime after catching an 8-yard TD pass from Deal with 2:33 to go until halftime.

Neither team scored in the third, but Gosselink’s 97-yard TD catch from Deal early in the fourth trimmed the Hawks’ deficit to 24-18.

Mount Ayr (5-1, 4-1 in the district) scored twice in the final 6:21 to close out the win.

Deal finished with a career-high 243 passing yards and three touchdowns. He also threw three picks and rushed for 18 yards.

Gosselink caught three passes for a career-high 121 yards and two scores, Bowlin grabbed three catches for 110 yards and one TD and Michael Spooner hauled in two catches for 10 yards.

Gavin Fisk rushed seven times for 16 yards and Matthew Mintle gained 12 yards on two carries.

Dawson James finished with a career-high 15 tackles and three tackles for loss to lead the L-S defense.

The Hawks (3-3, 2-2) also got 10.5 tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss from Fisk, 7.5 tackles from Gosselink, 6.5 tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss from Spooner and five tackles from Mintle.

Bowlin finished with 5.5 tackles and Carson Maston collected 4.5 tackles.

Mount Ayr gained 297 yards on 55 carries. Jackson Ruggles led the Raiders with 92 passing yards and 62 rushing yards and one TD.

Tate Dugan added 97 rushing yards and two scores on 14 carries, while Tyler Martin finished with 74 rushing yards and two TDs, 50 receiving yards on three catches and seven tackles on defense.

The loss and Madrid’s win over Central Decatur eliminates the Hawks from district championship contention. But L-S can clinch a playoff berth with at least one win in its final two games.
