State-ranked Hawks face loaded field at Williamsburg

Lynnville-Sully harriers face nine ranked teams

WILLIAMSBURG — The Lynnville-Sully cross country teams likely won’t face a tougher or deeper field than what it went against on Tuesday.

The state-ranked Hawks battled nine other ranked squads in both the girls and boys divisions and placed 10th at the Williamsburg Invitational.

Mount Vernon-Lisbon, which is ranked in the top five in Class 3A for both boys and girls, swept the team titles at the Williamsburg Sports Complex.

Hendrick Lowry

The top L-S finisher was Colton Alberts. He was 21st in the boys’ 5K race with a time of 17 minutes, 21.09 seconds.

Hendrick Lowry was 27th in 17:32.07 and Blake Wilmesmeier (17:44.73) finished 36th. Ethan Dunsbergen (18:57.39) and Keegan Schnell (19:06.01) were the final scoring runners in 86th and 91st, respectively.

Madden Gunsaulus (20:19.01) and Evan Arkema (20:50.73) were the non-scoring runners in 105th and 112th.

Class 3A No. 4 Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the boys team title with 58 points. Class 3A No. 9 ADM (83), 3A No. 13 Bondurant-Farrar (111), 3A No. 14 Carlisle (114) and 2A No. 16 Tipton (163) completed the top five.

Class 1A No. 5 Danville finished sixth with 191 points. Class 1A No. 19 Lynnville-Sully (246) was 25 points behind 2A No. 15 Pella Christian (221) but eight points in front of 2A No. 12 Vinton-Shellsburg (254).

Mandeesa Vos

There were 19 teams in the field and four other incomplete teams. Pella, which is ranked second in 3A, did not have its varsity runners.

Class 3A No. 4 Grady Olberding of Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the boys’ race in 15:52.1. Class 1A No. 2 Gage Heyne of English Valleys was the runner-up in 16:03.19.

The L-S girls were led by Mandeesa Vos in 25th. She finished the girls’ 5K race in 20:29.72.

Breah Lowry (21:29.3), Emma Parkinson (21:36.97), Peyton Sharp (21:45.25) and Olivia Norrish (22:54.72) were the final scoring runners in 46th, 48th, 51st and 75th, respectively. Abigail Ver Ploeg (25:13.09) was a non-scoring runner in 105th.

Class 3A No. 5 Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the girls’ team title with 67 points. Class 3A No. 4 Solon (71) was four points back in second.

Breah Lowry

Class 3A No. 18 Williamsburg (139), 3A No. 11 ADM (152) and Pella (185) rounded out the top five. The Lady Dutch, the top ranked team in 3A, did not have its varsity runners.

Class 1A No. 10 English Valleys (189) finished sixth, 2A No. 3 Tipton (212) was seventh, 2A No. 13 Pella Christian (213) took eighth and 1A No. 3 Lynnville-Sully scored 245 points in 10th. Tipton was missing 2A No. 1 Noelle Steines.

The Hawks were 56 points better than 1A No. 15 Danville, which finished 11th. There were 17 girls’ teams and six teams with incomplete rosters.

Evelyn Moeller of Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the girls’ 5K race in 18:49.86. Class 3A No. 28 Sydney Dee of Solon was the runner-up in 19:05.18.
