Madrid uses big second half to down Hawks on Homecoming

MADRID — Class A No. 10 Madrid rushed for 196 yards and held Lynnville-Sully’s football team to 198 total yards during a 21-0 win on Homecoming on Friday.

The Hawks were shut out for the first time since 2020. Preston Wicker’s three second-half touchdowns powered the Tigers to a 3-0 start in Class A District 6 action.

Gavin Fisk rushed for 64 yards on 12 carries and led the Hawk defense with 9.5 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Dawson James had 8.5 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss, while Terran Gosselink added 8.5 tackles and two tackles for loss.

Lannon Montgomery threw for 99 yards before leaving the game just before halftime with an ankle injury. His replacement, Connor Deal, completed six passes for 35 yards and one interception.

Michael Spooner grabbed three passes for a career-high 51 yards, Matthew Mintle added four catches for 29 yards and Jack Bowlin produced 23 yards on his four catches. Landyn Fisk snagged three passes for 20 yards.

Bowlin tallied 5.5 tackles, Spooner chipped in four tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss and Mintle collected 3.5 tackles.

Wyatt Mathis produced 2.5 tackles for the Hawks, who dropped to 2-2 and 1-1 in district play.

Wicker finished with 166 yards and three scores on 24 carries. His touchdown runs covered 27, 23 and 40 yards. He also had 84 passing yards, 6.5 tackles and one sack.

Easton Halverson led the defense with eight tackles and one interception. The Tigers (3-1, 3-0) had a 15-11 advantage in first downs.
