No. 11 NCMP gives plenty of resistance despite loss to No. 7 Ankeny

Hawks hand Aquagirls first loss thanks to points in diving competition

ANKENY — The Newton-Colfax-Mingo-Pella girls swim team faced off against a top-10 opponent on Thursday.

And if the points No. 7 Ankeny got in diving were taken away, the Aquagirls would have been within single digits of the Hawks.

The No. 11 Aquagirls won seven events overall, went 1-2 in the 100-yard freestyle and grabbed a 2-3 and 2-4 finish in two relays but came up a little short against the Hawks in part because three divers from the host school scored points in an event NCMP doesn’t compete in.

The Aquagirls did claim a 134-49 win over Des Moines Roosevelt but lost to Ankeny 102-81. Ankeny also downed Roosevelt 145-41. It was the first loss of the season for NCMP.

The Aquagirls (9-1) won the 200 freestyle relay in 1 minute, 44.29 seconds. The winning foursome featured Peyton Ray, Paige Benson, Alex Riney and Harper Barton.

NCMP’s team of Anna DeVries, Izzy Lane, Kimberlee Miller and Hailey Dickerson were fourth against Ankeny and second versus Roosevelt in 1:52.87.

NCMP did not win the other two relays but also were not more than a second back of Ankeny in either race.

The Aquagirls finished 2-4-5 in the 200 medley relay. The runner-up team featured Tori White, Addison Van Maanen, Lane and Riney and they finished in 1:56.55. Ankeny (5-0) won the race in 1:55.52. NCMP finished 1-2-3 against Roosevelt.

Peyton Ray

The foursome of Dickerson, DeVries, Julia Nedder and Benson finished the race in 2:06.03 and Emalee Weuve, Temple Barton, Avery Meyer and Miller hit the wall in 2:07.71.

In the 400 freestyle relay, the team of Ray, White, Van Maanen and Harper Barton scored a win over Roosevelt and finished second overall with a time of 3:48.02. Ankeny’s winning time was clocked in 3:47.84.

Benson, Lane, Temple Barton and Dickerson finished second against Roosevelt and third versus Ankeny with a time of 4:01.18.

Harper Barton and Van Maanen both won a pair of individual events.

Harper Barton and Ray finished 1-2 overall in the 100 freestyle with times of 54.91 seconds and 56.55 seconds, respectively. Ankeny went 3-4-5 in the event.

Barton’s other win came in the 50 freestyle. She was the overall winner in 25.1. Riney finished second against Roosevelt and fifth versus Ankeny with a time of 27.33.

Van Maanen won the 200 individual medley in 2:23.64 and White was the runner-up against Roosevelt and finished third versus Ankeny in 2:27.33. The Hawks picked up second- and fourth-place points.

NCMP was 1-3-4 in the 100 breaststroke. The Aquagirls were 1-2-3 against Roosevelt with Van Maanen winning in 1:12.97. Temple Barton (1:17.73) and DeVries (1:19.09) were next for NCMP.

The next best event for NCMP was the 100 backstroke. White won the event in 1:02.79. Riney (1:07.74) was fourth against Ankeny and second versus Roosevelt and Dickerson (1:08.46) finished fifth and third, respectively.

NCMP’s final win came in the 100 freestyle. Ray won the race in 2:03.64. Temple Barton (2:09.74) was second against Roosevelt and fourth in the matchup with Ankeny. The Hawks finished 2-3-5 overall.

In the 500 freestyle, Weuve (6:17.56) edged Meyer (6:17.67) for third overall. The NCMP duo was 1-2 against Roosevelt.

Ankeny was 1-2-4 in the 100 butterfly. Lane was NCMP’s top finisher in 1:07.57 and Benson was fifth overall in 1:09.96. Lane and Benson were 1-2 against Roosevelt.

Roosevelt’s lone win came in diving as the Rough Riders were 1-3-5 in the event, while Ankeny finished 2-4-6.

Notes: Ankeny is ranked No. 7 and NCMP is No. 11, according to the Bound Power Rankings. … The Aquagirls currently rank in the top 11 in the state in all three relays. NCMP’s best time of 1:43.64 in the 200 freestyle relay currently sits seventh. The times the Aquagirls posted in the 200 medley relay (1:56.55) and 400 freestyle relay (3:48.02) on Thursday moved them up to 11th and ninth, respectively. … White’s time of 1:02.79 in the 100 backstroke ranks 14th in the state according to what’s been posted on Bound. Harper Barton is 15th in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.
