L-S football can’t overcome second quarter in loss to Trojans

Bingham’s big night helps Pleasantville hand L-S first loss

SULLY — The Lynnville-Sully football team started fast against Class 1A Pleasantville, but the visiting Trojans used a huge second quarter to down the Hawks during a non-district game on Friday night.

Pleasantville outscored its hosts 20-0 in the second and scored the only fourth-quarter points during a 34-24 victory.

Matthew Mintle caught a pair of touchdowns, but Lynnville-Sully couldn’t overcome Braylon Bingham’s big night. The Trojan sophomore quarterback scored four total touchdowns and had an interception on defense.

The Hawks led 16-7 after one after Gavin Fisk scored on a 3-yard run and Mintle caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Lannon Montgomery. Dawson James had a two-point conversion run and Montgomery hit Mintle after their TD for the other two points.

Bingham was part of all three scoring drives for the Trojans in the second. He hit Logan Roff for a 42-yard TD strike before scoring on TD runs of 24 and 2 yards later.

Mintle caught an 18-yard TD pass from Montgomery in the third, but Pleasantville capped its win with a 30-yard TD run from JJ Phillips in the fourth.

Mintle finished with four catches for 54 yards and two scores, Fisk gained 44 yards and scored one TD on 15 carries and Montgomery finished with 164 passing yards, two TDs and one pick.

Jack Bowlin grabbed four passes for 90 yards, Jaiden Richards snagged one pass for 12 yards and Landyn Fisk’s lone catch went for eight yards.

The Hawks (2-1) were limited to 64 yards rushing on 32 carries. Pleasantville gained 164 yards on 18 carries.

James and Bowlin each had eight tackles to lead the defense, while Mintle and Montgomery collected six tackles. Defensive tackle statistics are unofficial.

Wyatt Mathis added four tackles and one sack, Ben Squires registered four tackles and Fisk and Michael Spooner each had three tackles. Cameyon James snagged his first career interception.

Bingham finished with 80 rushing yards and three scores and threw for 184 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Trojans, who improved to 2-1.

Phillips gained 117 yards on 18 carries and Zane Mullenix had 10 tackles, one sack and 2.5 tackles for loss to lead the defense.

The Trojans had a 22-12 advantage in first downs and overcame 70 penalty yards on eight flags.

It was Pleasantville’s first win over Lynnville-Sully since 2021.
