State-ranked DCG downs Newton volleyball in LHC opener

Cardinals finish strong in four-set loss

Career-best performances from Delaney Woollums and Macy Lampe and double-doubles from Woollums and Isabelle Rawlins were not enough for the Newton volleyball team on Tuesday.

The Cardinals opened Little Hawkeye Conference play against Class 4A No. 9 Dallas Center-Grimes and the visitors left town with a 25-18, 25-13, 21-25, 25-22 victory.

“As a team, we got our feet under us and fought hard in the third and fourth sets,” Newton head volleyball coach Heidi Woollums said.

Delaney Woollums had the best prep match of her career, finishing with a career-high 19 kills. She added 15 digs and two aces and her kill efficiency was .436.

Rawlins posted 36 assists, 12 digs and two aces and Lampe chipped in a career-best 12 kills along with eight digs and three aces.

“Delaney Woollums and Macy Lampe stepped up and put the ball down when we needed it,” Coach Woollums said. “Isabelle Rawlins is doing great adjusting to the 5-1 and will only continue to find her footing.”

Chloe Swank registered 23 digs, Sloan Brodersen had five digs, Lola Rivera put down three kills, Emersyn Gross collected two kills and Lainey Vander Schel chipped in two digs.

The Cardinals (5-2, 0-1 in the LHC) were 77-of-81 in serves with seven aces and had a kill efficiency of .180. Lampe was 18-of-18 in serves, while Brodersen finished 15-of-15 and Addison Hook was 13-of-14.

“Sloan Brodersen and Lola Rivera made some fantastic hustle plays and Chloe Swank led us in digs,” Coach Woollums said.

Landry Glasgow led the Mustangs with 17 kills and 15 digs and Maliya Carlson added 16 kills and 10 digs. Gwen Farley chipped in 53 assists and 10 digs.

DCG (9-1, 1-0) served up eight aces and had a kill efficiency of .315.
