Montgomery’s late TD pass propels L-S football past Danville

Hawks open season with road win against Bears

Lannon Montgomery

DANVILLE — Lannon Montgomery’s game-winning touchdown pass with 1 second to go completed his huge night on Friday.

The Lynnville-Sully football team rallied from an early hole and answered Danville’s game-tying points in the final minute with a go-ahead touchdown in the final seconds during a 30-22 non-district road win.

The Hawks led 14-7 after one quarter and took a 22-7 lead into the final frame before needing a late score to win.

Jack Bowlin

Montgomery threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns, ran for 61 yards and another score and snagged three interceptions on defense to lead the Hawks in their season opener. The 314 passing yards are the most since Mike Parkinson became the L-S head football coach. And as far back as the data goes, it’s the second most yardage in school history.

Montgomery gave the Hawks the lead following a 7-yard TD run with 4:21 to play in the first. He then added to the L-S lead with a 48-yard TD pass to Jack Bowlin.

The two hooked up again in the third quarter. This time, the 31-yard touchdown play pushed the margin to 22-8 after a two-point conversion run by Dawson James.

Danville rallied in the fourth thanks to a 93-yard interception return for a touchdown and a 60-yard TD catch by Kessler Whaley.

Matthew Mintle

Jaden Bauer also threw a 5-yard TD pass to Whaley in the first. His two-point conversion pass to Landon Seibert tied the game at 22-all with 49 seconds to play.

The Hawks needed only 48 seconds to go back in front though. And Montgomery’s 28-yard TD pass to Matthew Mintle proved to be the game winner. James pushed the advantage to eight with another two-point conversion run.

Bowlin finished with eight catches for 168 yards and two scores, while Mintle added eight catches for 94 yards and one score and two carries for 15 yards.

Gavin Fisk rushed for 68 yards on 17 carries to lead the ground game. Jaiden Richards added two catches for 26 yards, Michael Spooner made one catch for 19 yards and Landyn Fisk ran the ball once for 12 yards.
