Sieck leads L-S baseball to third straight district championship

State-ranked Hawks face Ankeny Christian Academy in substate final

SULLY — Lucas Sieck tossed five efficient innings and earned his 10th victory on the mound and led the Lynnville-Sully baseball team at the plate with two hits and the Class 1A No. 5 Hawks posted their fourth shutout in their last seven games during a 3-0 win over North Mahaska on Saturday.

Lynnville-Sully scored twice in the first inning and that’s all the Hawks needed to win the 1A District 13 championship. They added one run in the fourth.

The Hawks outscored their South Iowa Cedar League rivals 23-1 this season. It was the seventh straight win overall for L-S, which improved to 25-3.

The Hawks advance to the 1A Substate 7 title game where they face Ankeny Christian Academy (18-8) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Pella. L-S defeated the Eagles 9-0 earlier this season. ACA downed Earlham, 5-3, in its district title matchup.

Sieck and Carson Maston combined to shut out the Warhawks. Sieck (10-1) started, tossed five innings and earned the pitching win after allowing no runs and two hits while striking out eight.

Sieck needed just 62 pitches to complete the five innings and lowered his earned run average to 1.39.

Maston earned his second save after tossing the final two frames. He surrendered no runs and no hits but walked one and hit one batter and struck out two.

Maston got through two frames in 25 pitches and lowered his ERA to 1.27.

Sieck’s two hits led the L-S offense. He cranked out his ninth double and had one RBI. Corder Noun Harder walked twice, scored one run and stole two bases. It was his 21st walk of the season and he leads L-S with 41 runs and 26 steals and has a team-best on-base percentage of .673.

Maston finished with one hit, one run and one RBI, Jaiden Richards tallied one hit and one walk, Lannon Montgomery had the other hit and Burt Johnson scored one run.

The Hawks out-hit the Warhawks 5-2. North Mahaska had a 2-1 surplus in errors.

Jack Kelderman led North Mahaska (12-15) with one hit and one walk. He also allowed just one earned run and struck out five over six innings on the mound.
