L-S falls short against North Mahaska in regional opener

Conover, Brummel tie game with back-to-back homers in sixth

NEW SHARON — Back-to-back homers by Alexy Conover and Ava Brummel drew the Lynnville-Sully softball team even with North Mahaska in the final inning on Monday.

But the Warhawks scored in their final at-bat to advance in the postseason.

North Mahaska scored first and last to down the Hawks, 7-6, despite being out-hit 11-10 in a Class 1A Region 5 opening-round game.

Conover and Brummel hit solo home runs in the seventh to tie the game at 6-all.

Regan Grewe was intentionally walked in the bottom of the seventh and she stole second and third before scoring the winning run on a passed ball.

Conover and Brummel each finished with three hits and one homer, Conover doubled and scored two runs and Brummel added three RBIs.

Brummel ended the season as the team leader with 24 RBIs and 11 walks. She also batted a team-best .447 and had a team-high on-base percentage of .533.

Conover tallied a team-best 57 total bases, 11 doubles and three homers.

Jolan Fogle

Jolan Fogle had two hits, Terriyah Carter doubled, tallied one RBI and stole one base, Peyton Sharp added one hit and one run and Alaina Roberts had the other hit. Sharp and Roberts tied for the team lead with 22 runs.

Kate Harthoorn walked once and scored one run, Morgan Jones scored one run and Sophia Squires had one RBI. Jones led the team with 10 steals.

Fogle started in the circle and allowed six earned runs on nine hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings. She struck out two.

Conover (6-11) took the loss after surrendering an unearned run in the seventh. She allowed one hit and one walk in one inning.

North Mahaska (11-12) defeated Lynnville-Sully (9-17) three times this season. Two of those losses were decided by a total of three runs.

Alaina Roberts
