Newton’s Powers to cheer for William Penn

Cardinal senior chose the Statesmen in part because of size and proximity to home

Newton senior Morgan Powers plans to cheer for William Penn University at the collegiate level. Powers was a four-year football and winter cheerleader at Newton, served as one of the seven captains this season and plans to study elementary education. She was joined at her signing by her mother Misty Travis, back right, and her sister Matti Powers. Morgan Powers looked at other schools, too, before deciding William Penn was the best fit. "I liked the size of the school, it was closer to home and I have had family who have gone there," Powers said. "They loved it. I also have family and friends in Oskaloosa there now, too." Newton High School cheerleading coach Heather Ross adds, "Morgan is always willing to help me out, she’s a cheerful person and just loves it," Ross said. "You can tell. She's a good kid." Cheerleading has always been a part of Morgan's life as she followed in her sister's footsteps. "It was something I wanted to try," Morgan Powers said. "My older sister was a cheerleader at her high school. When it came to be my turn, I tried out and have loved it ever since." (Troy Hyde/Newton News)
