For the second straight season, the Newton girls soccer team posted its first win of the year against Williamsburg.

The Cardinals downed the Raiders by the same exact score they won by last season as Newton defeated its visitors 2-0 at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

Payton Carkhuff registered the first goal of her career and Aliviah Ross also scored during the non-conference match.

Carkhuff’s goal came on a free kick from about 30 yards out. She got to the ball just before the Williamsburg goalie and tapped it by her for the goal.

The Cardinals are 2-0 against Williamsburg (0-1) the past two seasons and are 1-1 for the second straight season.

Newton finished with 10 shots and Abby Chance delivered one assist. Natalee Freese helped the Cardinals claim their first shutout of the season. She made three saves in 80 minutes.
