Big second half lifts Newton boys past Marshalltown

Cardinals score three second-half goals in win over Bobcats

MARSHALLTOWN — Three second-half goals lifted the Newton boys’ soccer team past Marshalltown during a non-conference match on Monday night.

The Cardinals and Bobcats were tied at 2-all at halftime, but visiting Newton pulled away with a big second half during the season opener for both squads at Leonard Cole Field.

“It took us a little bit to get going, but we get points for a Class 4A win,” Newton head boys soccer coach Zach Jensen said. “That’s useful.”

Christian Lawson opened the scoring in the 7th minute off an assist from Nate Lampe.

The Bobcats evened the match two minutes later on a goal by Aristeo Herrera.

The Cardinals (1-0) went back in front in the 18th minute when Conner McPartlin blasted a free kick past Bobcat goalie David Gomez Patlan from 50 yards out.

Marshalltown’s final goal of the match came 10 minutes later as Aaron Ordaz-Zambrano drew the hosts even again.

Lampe and Caleb Mattes added second-half goals and an own goal by the Bobcats with 6 minutes to play completed the scoring.

Cody Klein delivered an assist on the Mattes goal. The own goal by Marshalltown (0-1) was set up by a Lampe throw-in and a Mattes header deflected off a Marshalltown defender.

“We got a lot of entry balls into the box, and that’s been our bread and butter the past few years,” Jensen said. “I was happy with the number of balls we got into the box, but I thought we should have scored a few more goals. We need better production and better efficiency.”

Jensen said freshman Kent Montgomery got significant minutes and held up well in his varsity debut.

He also was proud of senior goalie Hunter Teague, who bounced back with a strong second half after not playing his best in the first 40 minutes. Teague finished with 12 saves in 80 minutes.

“We had a one-on-one chat at halftime,” Jensen said. “Hunter turned things around in the second half and played much better. I was proud of him for that.”

Marshalltown was limited to eight shots and both of its shots on goal got by Teague.
