Newton girls finish fifth at Iowa State indoor

Trease headlines Cardinal boys in Ames

AMES — The defending shuttle hurdle state champions stayed on top of Class 3A, Tori White won the high jump and Lauren Clarke continues to shine in sprints as the Newton girls’ track and field team placed fifth at the Iowa Track Coaches Association’s Indoor Championships on Friday.

The Cardinal boys were led by Reilly Trease in the same event at Iowa State University on Thursday.

The Newton girls scored 34 points in fifth. ADM dominated the field with 84.5 points, while Gilbert (45), Clear Lake (36) and Pella (36) completed the top five.

“I’m proud of how everyone performed tonight,” Newton head girls track and field coach Rachelle Tipton said. “They should all be coming away with great motivation for the season.”

Newton’s two wins came in the shuttle hurdle relay and from Tori White in the high jump.

The Cardinals’ foursome of Mack Sims, Macy Lampe, White and Chloe Rorabaugh won the shuttle hurdle in 39.93 seconds. Lampe and Rorabaugh were part of Newton’s state title team last season.

White’s win in the high jump came on a mark of 5 feet, 1 inch. She cleared 4-9 and 5-1 on the first attempt and went over 4-11 on her second try.

The Cardinal sophomore edged defending state champion London Warmuth of ADM for the win.

Clarke was fifth in both the 200 and 400. Her 400 time was clocked in a career-best 1 minute, 0.39 seconds. She posted a career-best time of 27.17 in the 200. That’s faster than any time the Cardinals posted last season.

“The shuttle team looked amazing and the athletes were competitive as ever,” Tipton said. “They want to keep making noise this season. Lauren dominated her heat to grab a place on the podium in the 400. That’s a fantastic time for an indoor track.”

Bella Winther also ran in the 400 and she placed ninth in 1:04.97.

Three Cardinals competed in the 60 hurdles. White posted a time of 10.13 seconds to advance to the finals and finished sixth with a time of 9.94.

Rorabaugh finished ninth in 10.40 and Lampe was 11th in 10.43. There were 45 competitors in the event and 10.38 was the final qualifying time.

Lola Rivera was the other individual top-20 finisher. She was 16th in the 60 dash with a time of 8.66.

The Cardinals were ninth in both the 4x100 and sprint medley relays.

In the 4x100, the team of BrookLynn Britton, Clarke, Gracie Clayton and Rivera finished in 53.76.

The sprint medley relay team of Britton, Rorabaugh, Rivera and Winther posted a time of 2:00.4, which would have been the third fastest time last season.

Trease scored a top-10 finish in the boys 60 hurdles. He was sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 8.93. He lowered his time to 8.73 in the finals but stayed in sixth.

There were 30 competitors in the event, and Curtis Payne finished 27th out of 52 sprinters in the 60 dash. He finished in 7.53 seconds.
