The Class 1A state runner-up extends career to collegiate level

Colfax-Mingo senior John McGill signed with the Morningside University wrestling earlier this winter. He was joined at the signing by his father Dan McGill, left, mother Michelle McKinney-McGill and his sister Morgan McKinney-McGill. John McGill chose Morningside over Central College, Coe College and Loras College. "Morningside has awesome coaches and really good classes for what I want to do. It just felt right." McGill was a 2022-23 state place winner who plans to wrestle at 165 or 174 pounds next year at Morningside. "I just have to work harder, get a little better and try to make the starting lineup as soon as possible," McGill said. Morningside head wrestling coach Rulin Pederson loves McGill's work ethic and character. Earning a spot in the varsity lineup as a freshman also is possible. "With his work ethic and what he does this summer might make the transition for him quicker than others," Pederson said. "That’s the exciting part.
