State-ranked Hawks have little trouble with Lamoni in district opener

SULLY — Eleven Hawks scored at least three points, the Hawks made nearly half of their shots from the floor and Klayton Van Dyke’s double-double powered the Lynnville-Sully boys’ basketball team to a 76-16 win in its postseason opener on Monday.

The Class 1A No. 7 Hawks led 27-3 after one quarter and cruised to the easy 1A District 13 win. L-S turned the ball over just five times and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds.

“We were able to create some turnovers early, which got our offense going,” L-S head boys basketball coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We did a good job taking care of the basketball. Getting 23 assists with only seven turnovers is a great ratio for us.”

L-S won the second 17-5, dominated the third 21-6 and outscored Lamoni 11-2 in the fourth.

Van Dyke posted a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double with three blocks and Carson Maston added 13 points, three rebounds and four assists.

Dawson James totaled 10 points and nine boards, Hendrick Lowry contributed eight points, six rebounds and two steals and Keegan DeWitt chipped in six points, two rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Corder Noun Harder tallied five points, three rebounds, four assists and seven steals, Lucas Sieck added four points, two rebounds, four assists and six steals and Mitchell Miller grabbed three rebounds.

The Hawks went deep into their bench, too. Jack Bowlin finished with three points and two rebounds, Sawyer Veldhuizen added four points and two rebounds, Connor Deal tallied four points, two rebounds and three steals and Michael Spooner put in three points.

Lynnville-Sully, which won its 15th straight game, shot 49 percent from the floor and made 8-of-21 from 3-point range.

Lamoni (5-12) came into the game winners of five of its previous six games after starting the season 0-10.
