Newton girls down Lynx for third straight win

Turnovers plague Cardinals in loss to 4A No. 9 Norwalk

WEBSTER CITY — Tori White posted a double-double, Alex Riney had the best game of her high school career and the Newton girls’ basketball team used a fast start and a big fourth quarter to down Webster City on Monday.

The Cardinals held the Lynx to 29 percent shooting and won the rebounding battle during a 55-39 non-conference road victory.

Newton led 15-8 after one quarter and pulled away for good with an 18-8 fourth. The two teams played to a difference of one point in the middle two frames.

It was the first matchup between the two schools in the Bound era.

The Cardinals posted their third straight win, which is the program’s longest streak since last winning three in a row in 2015-16.

White had a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead the Cardinals, while Riney added 11 points, nine rebounds, a career-best eight assists and five steals.

Payton Carkhuff chipped in nine points and three assists, Evie Main scored eight points and Bella Winther tallied six points and two rebounds.

Hailey Dickerson registered three points, three rebounds and two assists and Alex Garvis grabbed five boards and swiped two steals.

Newton (6-13) shot 44 percent from the floor, made 5-of-14 from 3-point range and connected on 14-of-25 from the free-throw line. The Cardinals also committed 19 turnovers.

The visitors made two more 3s than Webster City and had a 10-point advantage from the foul line.

Webster City (1-19) shot 29 percent from the floor, made 3-of-28 from 3 and connected on 4-of-9 from the foul line.

The Lynx were led by Olivia Gallentine and Marissa Hedeen, who had 11 points and 11 rebounds, respectively. Joleah Stuhr chipped in six points and six rebounds.

Newton’s six wins are the program’s most since winning seven in 2019-20. The Cardinals won eight games in 2016-17.

Norwalk 72, Newton 43

NORWALK — The Cardinals had a better shooting percentage than Norwalk on Tuesday, but the Class 4A No. 9 Warriors made 11 treys and Newton turned the ball over 34 times during a 72-43 home win.

Norwalk led the Little Hawkeye Conference game 24-14 after one and outscored the Cardinals 18-6 in the second.

White led Newton with 12 points, nine rebounds and two assists and Main totaled 12 points and two boards.

Dickerson chipped in six points and three rebounds, Riney grabbed nine boards and swiped two steals and Carkhuff scored six points. Garvis had two rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Haylie Ryan added three points and two rebounds, Winther grabbed two rebounds and swiped two steals and Merissa Schiebel grabbed two rebounds.

The Cardinals, who dropped to 1-11 in conference play, shot 44 percent from the floor, made 4-of-10 from 3 and connected on 11-of-16 from the foul line.

Norwalk (16-4, 8-3 in the conference) shot 37 percent from the floor, buried 11-of-30 from 3 and drilled 15-of-27 from the foul line. The Warriors turned the ball over six times.

Bailey Birmingham led Norwalk with 21 points, Braelyn Clark put in 18 points and Ava Carlson grabbed 11 rebounds.
