Mattes’ career night not enough for Newton boys in loss to Oskaloosa

Cardinals fall to conference rival Indians at home

A career night for Caleb Mattes was not enough for the Newton boys’ basketball team against Oskaloosa on Friday.

The Indians broke open a close game at halftime with a strong second-half performance and defeated Newton 64-55 during Little Hawkeye Conference play.

The Indians trailed by one at halftime but won the third 16-10, outscored the Cardinals 17-13 in the fourth and posted their first win in the series since January 31, 2010.

Mattes led the Cardinals with a career-high 28 points, but Newton made just 5-of-23 from 3-point range and was out-rebounded 31-19.

Mattes added four rebounds and two steals but was the only Cardinal in double figures.

Christian Lawson finished with six points, six rebounds and three assists, Nate Lampe tallied six points, two assists and three steals and Caden Klein tallied five points, three rebounds and five assists.

Hunter Teague collected four points and two boards, Christian Ergenbright scored three points and Braelyn Parks dished out three assists.

Newton shot 42 percent from the floor and made 8-of-14 from the free-throw line.

However, Oskaloosa got 34 points and six assists from Max Roach and Aidan Scholes tallied 13 points and seven boards. Roach was 4-of-6 from 3 and Scholes made 3-of-9 from deep.

The Indians (3-13, 2-9) made 50 percent of their shots from the floor, buried 8-of-18 from 3 and connected on 18-of-21 from the foul line.
