Newton girls snap skid against Des Moines Hoover

DES MOINES — Tori White played the best varsity game of her career, Evie Main put in a career-high for points and the Newton girls’ basketball team grabbed 20 offensive rebounds during a 70-46 road win over Des Moines Hoover on Saturday.

The Cardinals snapped a six-game losing streak with the non-conference victory. They led by 11 after one quarter and took a 19-point lead into halftime.

White finished with a career-best 17 points, tied a career-most with 13 rebounds and added five assists and three steals to lead Newton. She was 7-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.

Evie Main

Main scored a career-best 16 points. She was 4-of-12 from 3-point range and grabbed three rebounds.

Hailey Dickerson contributed nine points and three rebounds, Alex Garvis tallied seven points, nine boards and four assists and Payton Carkhuff registered five points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Bella Winther finished with five points and three rebounds, Estella Allen added three points and five boards, Haylie Ryan posted four points and three rebounds and Alex Riney pulled down five rebounds.

The Cardinals (2-8) shot 39 percent from the floor, made 7-of-24 from 3 and buried 9-of-11 from the foul line. Newton turned the ball over 20 times but grabbed 48 rebounds.

Des Moines Hoover (0-13) won the fourth quarter 15-11 but it wasn’t near enough to rally back.
