PELLA — Led by Stella Cupples, three Cardinals went 3-0 for the night, but the Newton girls’ wrestling team found the win column just once as a team during a road quadrangular hosted by Pella on Thursday.
The Cardinals downed English Valleys 36-24 but lost 36-21 to Norwalk and 42-21 to the host Lady Dutch.
Newton had a winning record in contested matches against both English Valleys and Pella, but forfeits plagued the Cardinals in all three duals.
In the win over English Valleys, Newton was 4-1 in contested matches. Those wins came by fall from Ashlyn Van Manen at 190 pounds, Cupples at 115, Claire Breuer at 135 and Savannah Carr at 140.
The Cardinals took one less forfeit than English Valleys and those were accepted by Kylee Ashley at 235 and Kylee Adams at 100.
Newton was 2-3 in contested matches and 2-3 in forfeit wins against Norwalk. Cupples won by fall and Adams won her match 9-7. The forfeits were taken by Breuer and Carr.
The Cardinals were 4-3 in contested matches against Pella but were 0-4 in forfeit wins. Ashley, Cupples and Breuer all won by fall, while Adams scored a 6-4 win.
Cupples was 3-0 for the night and all three of her pins came in the first period. Breuer was 3-0 with two pins, Adams finished 3-0 and Ashley and Carr both were 2-1.
Notes: Saturday’s girls wrestling tournament in Pella was cancelled due to weather.
