Tough shooting night hinders Newton girls in loss to Dutch

Cardinals commit 26 turnovers against rival Pella

A tough shooting night and 26 turnovers plagued the Newton girls’ basketball team against Pella on Friday night.

The Cardinals fell behind early and never recovered during a 59-33 home loss in Little Hawkeye Conference play.

Payton Carkhuff and Tori White both posted a pair of career bests, but it was not enough.

Newton trailed 23-8 after one quarter and was outscored 15-11 in the second and 12-4 in the third. The Cardinals won the fourth 10-9.

Carkhuff registered a career-best nine points and a career-high six rebounds to lead the Cardinals, while White added a career-most eight rebounds and a career-high five assists in the loss.

Hailey Dickerson scored eight points, Alex Garvis grabbed seven boards and swiped two steals and Alex Riney pulled down five rebounds.

Haylie Ryan chipped in four points and two rebounds, Bella Winther added three points and two steals and Riley Plowman and Brooke Garvis both corralled two rebounds.

The Cardinals shot 24 percent from the floor, made 3-of-11 from 3-point range and connected on 6-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Kennedy Van Vark led Pella with 13 points and nine Dutch players scored at least four points, including former Cardinal Sophia Reynolds.

Reynolds tallied four points and two rebounds in the win.

The Dutch (6-2, 1-1) shot 42.4 percent from the floor, made 5-of-21 from 3 and hit only 4-of-17 from the foul line. Pella turned the ball over 15 times.
