Cardinal trio leads Newton girls in Cardinal Classic

Three Cardinals finish third in home wrestling tournament

Ella Machin, Kylee Adams and Claire Breuer all finished in third place in their respective weights during the Newton Girls Cardinal Classic on Saturday.

The Cardinals entered eight wrestlers into six different weight classes and placed ninth in the final standings.

Newton scored 64 points, finishing five points in front of Ballard (59) and 11 points back of Martensdale-St. Marys (75).

Both Breuer and Machin were 3-1 for the day with three pins. Breuer finished third at 140 pounds, while Machin grabbed the bronze medal at 190.

Two of Machin’s pins came in 19 seconds and 54 seconds.

Adams finished third at 105 after going 1-1 for the day. Stella Cupples, Kamiya Lepley, Shawna Foreman and Lilly Fuchs also recorded one victory at their weights.

Fuchs finished fifth at 190 and one of her two losses came to Machin. Lepley was sixth at 155, Cupples placed sixth at 115 and Foreman ended up seventh at 155.

Savannah Carr also wrestled at 145 but went 0-3. Cupples won her first match but lost her second bout after suffering an injury and medical forfeited out of the tournament.

South Tama County won the tournament championship with 216 points. Ottumwa (195), Pella (138), Carlisle (124) and Indianola (117) completed the top five.

Red Oak (95), Southern Tier (84), Martensdale-St. Marys (75), Newton (64), Ballard (59), Pleasantville (58) and Oskaloosa (13) completed the 12-team field.

Indianola 42, Newton 30

The Cardinals also battled Little Hawkeye Conference rival Indianola on Thursday during a home varsity doubleheader with the boys’ squad.

Cupples got the Cardinals’ only contested win in the matchup as the Indians won the dual 42-30.

Cupples (3-1) won by fall in 16 seconds at 115. She spent a total of 44 seconds on the mat in her first two matches this winter.

The girls’ dual featured two double forfeits and four forfeit wins each way. Indianola was 3-1 in contested matches.

The Cardinals (0-2, 0-1 in the LHC) got forfeit wins from Foreman (155), Lepley (170), Machin (190) and Fuchs (235).
