Newton boys score first win, down Marshalltown

Cardinals cruise past host Bobcats at The Roundhouse

The Newton boys’ basketball team made more than half of its shots from the floor and a balanced offensive attack coupled with a strong defensive effort propelled the Cardinals to their first win of the season on Thursday.

Newton outscored Marshalltown in every quarter and cruised to a 59-33 non-conference road win.

Christian Lawson led the Cardinals with a career-high 18 points and he added eight rebounds and four assists and Nate Lampe chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Newton (1-1) shot 51 percent from the floor, made 7-of-16 from 3-point range and connected on 2-of-5 from the free-throw line. The Cardinals turned the ball over only 12 times.

Caleb Mattes posted eight points, nine boards and three assists and Caden Klein added eight points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Cade Bauer put in seven points, Hunter Teague pulled down four boards, Christian Ergenbright scored four points and Landon Bozarth had two rebounds.

The win snapped Marshalltown’s two-game win streak in the series. The Bobcats are 11-6 against the Cardinals since 2007.
