Newton girls open season with loss to Chariton

CHARITON — Four days after shooting 12 percent from 3-point range, the Chariton girls’ basketball team made 6-of-8 from deep and cruised past Newton in the Cardinals’ season opener on Tuesday.

The Chargers used a fast start to grab an advantage and shot 54 percent from the floor during a 63-35 non-conference win.

The Cardinals were plagued by 26 turnovers and connected on just 2-of-14 from 3. Newton made 32.5 percent from the floor and buried 7-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Chariton turned the ball over just seven times and made 17 free throws. The Chargers led 19-5 after one quarter and took a 35-14 lead into halftime.

Haylie Ryan led the Cardinals (0-1) with seven points and four rebounds, while Tori White chipped in four points, three assists and two steals.

Alex Riney registered six points and three boards, Riley Plowman added three points, two rebounds and two assists and Payton Carkhuff scored five points and grabbed two rebounds in her varsity debut.

Bella Winther tallied four points and two boards, Brooke Garvis scored four points in her varsity debut and Hailey Dickerson pulled down two rebounds.

Mckenzie Snook led Chariton (2-0) with 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals and Tatyana Allen-Winston collected 14 points, five boards and three steals. The Chargers out-rebounded Newton 33-25.
