No. 10 Hawks survive Mount Ayr in overtime

Lynnville-Sully downs Raiders despite 169 total yards

SULLY — Despite struggling to run the ball against Mount Ayr on Friday night, the Class A No. 10 Lynnville-Sully football team found a way to win on Homecoming.

The Hawks averaged just 1.7 yards per carry and gained only 169 total yards, but an overtime touchdown pass from Lucas Sieck to Terran Gosselink sent the home team to a 23-16 victory during Class A District 6 action.

The two teams traded touchdowns throughout the night.

Mount Ayr countered with a 35-yard TD run by Dylan Thompson with 2:55 to play in the second.

A short run by CJ Nikkel in the third followed by a Tate Dugan 45-yard run in the fourth kept the game tied as both teams converted their 2-point tries.

The scoring pattern continued as the Hawks improved to 5-1 and 3-1 in the district following the 10-yard TD grab by Gosselink. It was his only catch of the game.

Sieck finished 9-of-20 through the air for 117 yards and the game-winning touchdown pass.

The Hawks were limited to 52 yards on 30 carries. Dawson James led the way with 20 yards on seven carries. Nikkel and Montgomery combined for 31 yards on 19 carries.

Montgomery grabbed three passes for 44 yards, Blake Van Wyk tallied three catches for 25 yards and Mitchell Miller snagged a 25-yard catch. James’ only reception went for 13 yards.

Gosselink led the defense with three tackles and two interceptions, Klayton Van Dyke registered five tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss and Nikkel, James and Jack Bowlin all finished with five tackles.

Wyatt Mathis added four tackles, Miller posted 3.5 tackles and Van Wyk and Davis Utech each collected three tackles.

Nikkel returned a kickoff 28 yards and Sieck booted two touchbacks on kickoffs.

Mount Ayr (3-3, 2-3) got 108 yards rushing and a TD on 11 carries from Thompson and Dugan added 72 yards rushing and 26 yards receiving on offense and nine tackles on defense.

The Raiders ran for 247 yards on 38 carries but threw two interceptions and committed 12 penalties for 86 yards.

Dalton Barnes led the Mount Ayr defense with 12 tackles and one sack.

Lynnville-Sully posted its second straight win and the second straight victory against the Raiders. The Hawks are 2-1 against Mount Ayr since 2015, including a postseason win last fall.
