VINTON — Adrien Robbins continues to one-up himself and his Class 2A competition.
Robbins ran for a career-high and set a new school record with 307 rushing yards and scored four touchdowns on Friday night during the PCM football team’s 49-15 win over Vinton-Shellsburg.
The Mustangs ran for 377 yards, led 35-7 at halftime and stayed unbeaten in Class 2A District 6 play.
It was the third straight win for PCM, which improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the district.
The Mustangs and Vinton-Shellsburg had never played a game against each other in the Varsity Bound era.
PCM opened the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Gavin Van Gorp to Gabe Hobbs. A 2-point conversion run from Robbins made it 8-0.
Robbins’ first TD run came in the final minute of the first quarter and covered 28 yards. His second TD run of 12 yards answered Vinton-Shellsburg’s first-half score.
Robbins scored again from 2 yards out with 45 seconds to play until halftime and then Van Gorp reached paydirt on a 4-yard TD run in the final seconds.
PCM’s only points of the third came on a 79-yard TD run by Robbins and Van Gorp capped the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jack Jungling in the fourth.
Robbins’ 307 yards came on 33 carries. He averaged 9.3 yards per carry and grabbed a 20-yard reception. Robbins, who also returned a kickoff 28 yards, now leads 2A with 1,063 rushing yards and his 15 rushing TDs are second.
Van Gorp finished 5-of-7 through the air for 71 yards and two scores. He also ran for 43 yards and another score on eight carries and his lone punt went for 45 yards.
Hobbs added 47 yards and a TD on three catches, Shay Burns gained 22 yards on four carries and Jungling’s 4-yard TD catch was his only grab of the game.
Trenner Van Dyke had 7.5 tackles and three tackles for loss to lead the defense, while Finn Wilson totaled eight tackles.
Kaden Clark finished with 4.5 tackles, Allias Nolin and Hewitt Brinegar each tallied 3.5 tackles and Evan Jones, Sawyer Bouwkamp and Griffin Olson all registered three tackles.
Dominic Witt was 5-of-5 in extra points and booted five of his eight kickoffs for touchbacks. His 16 touchbacks this fall rank tied for sixth in 2A.
Zach Staab was 12-of-23 through the air for 166 yards and one score for Vinton-Shellsburg, which fell to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the district.
Darian Schneider grabbed four passes for 94 yards and two scores and he led the defense with 11 tackles and one fumble recovery.
Brant Dickinson collected six tackles and threw a 10-yard TD pass.
Vinton-Shellsburg (0-6, 0-3) finished with 44 rushing yards on 27 carries and averaged 1.6 yards per carry.
