PCM boys golfers crowned HOIAC champions

Mustangs finish second at C-M Tigerhawk Invitational

STATE CENTER — Not even “the windiest day” PCM head boys golf coach Collin Harrison has ever seen on a golf course could keep the Mustangs from winning the Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference title on Tuesday.

PCM captured the top two individual spots, the four scoring golfers finished in the top 10 and the Mustangs ran away with the conference tournament championship at the par 72 Lincoln Valley Golf Course.

Nick Farver was the meet medalist with an 80, Grant Van Veen shot 82 as the runner-up and PCM won the HOIAC title with a 341. Nevada was the runner-up at 358.

Host West Marshall shot 366 in third and the rest of the seven-team field featured Greene County (379), South Hamilton (383), Roland-Story (385) and Saydel (472).

After Farver and Van Veen was Easton Van Veen, who finished eighth with an 89. Farver and the Van Veen brothers all were all-conference golfers.

Tate Tangeman carded a 90 and finished ninth as the final counting score. Jeffrey McDanel was 11th with a non-counting 91 and Charlie Ford turned in a non-counting 98.

The top five Mustangs on Tuesday all fared better on the second nine than they did on the first. Farver went 41-39, Grant Van Veen had splits of 45-37 and Easton Van Veen’s splits were 46-43. Tangeman (50-40) was 10 shots better and McDanel (50-41) improved by nine strokes.

Three other golfers joined Grant Van Veen with 82s — Greene County’s Jack Hansen, Nevada’s Kyle Kingsbury and West Marshall’s Luke Vawter.

Mustangs finish second at C-M Tigerhawk Invitational

COLFAX — All six Pella Christian golfers shot 83 or lower during the Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawk Boys Golf Invitational on Friday.

That consistency helped the Eagles edge PCM during the annual 18-hole event at Colfax Country Club.

Pella Christian shot 320 and edged the Mustangs (323) by three strokes. The rest of the five-team field included Pleasantville (334), Newton (355) and host Colfax-Mingo (453).

While the Eagles locked down second, third and fifth in the individual standings, PCM’s Easton Van Veen shot a career-best 75 to win medalist honors.

Newton’s Kinnick Pritchard and PCM’s Farver were two of three golfers who shot 82 in a tie for seventh. Five players also shot 83, including Grant Van Veen and McDanel.

Newton’s other three counting golfers were Peyton Rozendaal (88), Ethan Pageler (92) and Lincoln Peterson (93).

Tangeman (84) and Ford (97) turned in non-counting scores for the Mustangs.

Colfax-Mingo was led by Luke Allen’s 103. Cason Fitch (105), Konner Bennett (117) and Jacob Riddle (128) had the other counting scores.

Pella Christian’s Isaiah Breems was the runner-up medalist with a 78 and Eliot Menninga shot an 80 in third.

The five teams played the nine-hole Colfax Country Club course twice through.

After nine holes, Farver and Tangeman led the Mustangs with 40s and the Van Veen brothers had 41s. Easton Van Veen shot 34 on the second nine and Farver and Grant Van Veen each carded 42s.

McDanel recovered from his front nine 44 to shoot 39 on the back. Ford also improved his second nine by five strokes.
