Newton girls soccer downs East in shootout

Indianola edges Cardinals, 1-0, in LHC play

DES MOINES — The Newton girls’ soccer team needed extra penalty kicks to down Des Moines East on April 27.

The Cardinals and Scarlets played to a scoreless draw for 100 minutes before Newton edged the hosts, 3-2, in the shootout at Williams Stadium.

Cailyn Doland, Aliviah Ross and Merissa Schiebel all converted penalty kicks in the shootout. The Cardinals were 3-of-7 in penalty kicks.

Newton took 14 shots in the win and goalie Natalee Freese stopped 13 shots to preserve the shutout. Freese now ranks sixth in Class 2A with 140 saves.

The Cardinals improved to 6-6-1 this spring. All six wins have been by shutout.

Indianola 1, Newton 0

INDIANOLA — Remy Sivertsen scored the match’s only goal in the first half and it held up during Indianola’s 1-0 home victory over Newton on Monday.

The Cardinals took seven shots and Freese registered 14 saves during the Little Hawkeye Conference matchup. The Indians (5-6 overall, 2-2 in the conference) put 18 of their 21 shots on goal.

Newton fell to 1-3-1 in conference play. The Cardinals have been outscored 10-0 in the three losses.
