Klein’s win leads Newton boys at Grinnell

Cardinals register six top-three finishes, finish fourth at Tiger Relays

GRINNELL — Caden Klein had two tough battles with Pella on Tuesday. The Cardinal freshman edged out one of them to win the 400-meter hurdles and nearly scored another victory in the 400 to lead Newton to a fourth-place finish at the Grinnell High School Coed Tiger Relays.

The Cardinals scored 58 points in the four-team field. Pella won the meet title with 138 points. Grinnell had 98 in second and Williamsburg was third with 86.

Newton’s lone win came from Klein in the 400 hurdles. He was clocked in a career-best 57.13 seconds. Pella’s Trey Van Hauen was second in 57.36.

Klein was part of two of the Cardinals’ three runner-up finishes.

In the 400, Klein (career-best 52.28) trailed Pella distance star Chase Lauman (51.87) by .41 seconds to take the silver medal.

In the shuttle hurdle relay, Curtis Payne, Reilly Trease, Klein and Brody Bauer finished second in 1 minute, 8.34 seconds.

The final second-place finish came from Thomas Stadelmann in the shot put. His career-best toss covered 47 feet, 1 3/4 inches.

Bauer grabbed both of Newton’s third-place finishes. He was third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.08 and his time in the 110 high hurdles was clocked in a career-best 16.9 seconds. Cade Bauer finished fifth in the event in 19.2.

The Cardinals scored double points in the 100. Payne (career-best 11.97) finished fourth and Christian Ergenbright (season-best 12.0) was fifth. Payne (season-best 54.71) also took fourth in the 400, Ergenbright (23.28) came in fourth in the 200 and Cole Smith was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 16-8.
