L-S track teams take victory laps at home meet

C-M boys also compete at L-S Hawk Coed Invitational

SULLY — The girls piled up 10 wins and 18 top-two finishes and the boys registered nine victories and 17 top-three tallies.

The Lynnville-Sully track and field teams both took victory laps after winning the L-S Hawk Coed Invitational on Thursday.

The girls scored 188 points in the four-team field, while the boys outperformed seven programs and scored 171.5 points in first. The meet was a makeup from a previous postponed date.

“It’s always exciting and fun to compete at home, especially at the end of the night if they announce our team the winner,” L-S head boys track and field coach Darin Arkema said. “Outstanding performances and efforts tonight despite very strong wind gusts and warm temperatures through the first half of the meet.”

Colfax-Mingo’s boys also participated in the meet and finished with 34 points in sixth.

The Hawk boys won four relays and Conner Maston, Corder Noun Harder, James Gruver and Hendrick Lowry all won individual events.

The L-S girls got individual wins from Tatum Huyser, Alaina Roberts, Abby Squires, Carsyn McFarland and Allie Van Wyk and the Hawks scored three relay victories.

“It was a great team effort. The Hawks competed all night long,” L-S girls’ head track and field coach Kevin Johnson said. “We saw a lot of good times and improvements overall.”

Maston won two different individual events on the boys’ side. He started his night with a win in the high jump. His top mark was 6 feet, 1 inch and Caleb Rea finished fourth with a leap of 5-6. Colfax-Mingo’s Xavier Woods also had a season-best jump of 5-6 to place third.

Maston’s second win came in the 400-meter dash as he was clocked in a career-best 50.45 seconds, which ranks fourth in Class 1A.

Noun Harder won the 100 in 11.74, Gruver ran a season-best 55.01 to win the 400 hurdles and Lowry grabbed the win in the 800 with a career-best time of 2 minutes, 11.45 seconds.

Gruver’s time of 55.01 in the 400 hurdles ranks third in 1A.

The Hawks scored double points in six events. Colfax-Mingo finished 2-3 in the 110 high hurdles, too.

Lowry placed second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:10.39 and Zach Morningstar was third in 5:16.31. Morningstar (11:23.49) also placed second in the 3,200.

In the 200, Rea placed second in 24.4 seconds and Bryce Richards took fourth in 24.87. Connor Deal finished fourth in the 400 hurdles in a career-best time of 1:04.93.

Jack Bowlin (career-best 18-11 3/4) and Gentry Walston (career-best 18-1 1/2) were second and fifth, respectively, in the long jump and Squires (43-1) and Dawson James (career-best 39-5 1/2) placed second and sixth, respectively, in the shot put.

Austin Larson and Isaac Vos had the final top-six finishes for the Hawks. Larson placed fifth in the 110 highs in a career-best 18.62 seconds and Vos placed sixth in the discus with a toss of 98-5.

The Hawks won the sprint medley, shuttle hurdle, 4x100 and 4x400 relays and were second in the distance medley relay.

Squires, Richards, Noun Harder and Gruver won the sprint medley relay in 1:37.88. Squires, Noun Harder and Richards also teamed up with Maston to win the 4x100 relay in 44.92.

In the 4x400, Rea, Noun Harder, Gruver and Maston finished first in a season-best 3:35.78, which ranks seventh in 1A.

The winning shuttle hurdle relay team consisted of Larson, Rea, Terran Gosselink and Deal and they finished in 1:12.12.

Squires, Richards, Walston and Gosselink placed second in the distance medley relay in 4:06.42.

The L-S 4x800 relay team finished third in 9:35.68. That bronze-medal-winning team featured Lowry, Walston, Michael Spooner and Ethan Dunsbergen.

“We scored points in all 19 events, which is a first on the season,” Arkema said. “That shows not just how many guys we have on the team, but how strong of quality our group is.”

The C-M shuttle hurdle relay team placed second with Woods, Carter Gibson, Izaiah Lewis and Wyatt Thornton. They finished the race in 1:13.51.

Gibson was the runner-up in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 17.35 and Woods placed third in 17.48. Woods also finished third in the 400 hurdles in 1:04.6.

The L-S boys won the meet with 171.5 points. The rest of the eight-team field included Pella (129), North Mahaska (104.5), Montezuma (71), Martensdale-St. Marys (51), Colfax-Mingo (34), Sigourney (25) and Tri-County (1).

“The guys were more focused and conscientious about getting proper warm-up before their event, especially in relays, as we focused time yesterday on improving our handoffs,” Arkema said.

Huyser and McFarland led the Hawk girls with a pair of individual wins.

Huyser won the high jump with a leap of 4-8 and ran to a win in the 400 in a career-best time of 1:05.03. Laura Fikse placed fourth in the 400 in a career-best 1:15.08.

McFarland (career-best 13.42) and Huyser (career-best 13.64) finished first and second, respectively, in the 100 and McFarland also won the 200 in 28.98 seconds.

Roberts and Fikse were 1-2 in the long jump with career-best marks of 13-11 1/2 and 13-5, respectively. Abby Squires also won the discus with a heave of 93-7. The other individual win came from Van Wyk and she was first in the 100 hurdles in a season-best 18.52 seconds.

Greenlee Smock (12:20.23) finished second in the 3,000, Kate Harthoorn (career-best 2:43.91) was the runner-up in the 800 and Olivia Norrish (5:58.47) placed second in the 1,500.

Roberts ran a career-best 1:26.61 to place fourth in the 400 hurdles and Sophia Squires (career-best 29-8 1/2) and Abby Squires (season-best 29-6) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the shot put.

The other wins for the L-S girls came in the shuttle hurdle, 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

In the shuttle hurdle relay, the team of Roberts, Morgan Hay, Harthoorn and Van Wyk had a winning time of 1:21.97.

The winning 4x100 relay team of McFarland, Van Wyk, Morgan Jones and Huyser finished in 53.98 seconds. The 4x200 team of Hay, Jones, McFarland and Smock had a winning and season-best time of 1:57.

The Hawks were second in the 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley relays.

In the 4x400 relay, Elise Alberts, Kinsley Tice, Roberts and Harthoorn placed second in 4:45.64.

Tice, Harthoorn and Alberts teamed up with Norrish to place second in the 4x800. They finished the race in a season-best 11:08.54.

The distance medley relay team of Hay, Jones, Smock and Norrish took second in 4:58.54.

Lynnville-Sully’s 188 points won the meet championship. Martensdale-St. Marys scored 151 in second and Sigourney (130) and Pella (55) completed the field.
