CRESTON — Ben Richardson and Austin Lane each registered hat tricks to lead the Central Iowa United boys’ soccer team to a 7-0 road win over Creston during its season opener on Tuesday.
CIU led 2-0 at halftime before scoring five goals in the final 40 minutes. Lane added two assists, while Richardson delivered one.
Josh Pinnick chipped in a goal and an assist and Bruno Asteinza also contributed one assist.
CIU put 18 of its 21 shots on goal and Lucas Barnes tallied eight saves in 80 minutes. Creston fell to 0-1 for the season.
Greene County 6, Central Iowa United 2
STATE CENTER — Richardson scored twice and Lane delivered both assists, but Greene County led 4-2 at halftime and cruised past Central Iowa United, 6-2, on Thursday during the Heart of Iowa Conference opener for both teams.
Gesser Gutierres scored three times for the Rams (2-0, 1-0), while Jose Velazco added one goal and two assists.
Fourteen of the 21 shots by the Rams were placed on goal. Barnes had 14 saves in his 80 minutes in goal.
Central Iowa United (1-3, 0-1) registered five shots and all five were on target.
CIU girls open season with pair of losses
Eden Moore scored five goals, Katie Vaught had a hat trick and visiting Van Meter downed the Central Iowa United girls’ soccer team 10-0 during the season opener on Monday.
Van Meter led 8-0 at halftime and ended the match 5 minutes into the second half.
Cassidy Smith had 14 saves for Central Iowa United.
Moore added two assists to her five goals. Grace Garrison chipped in four assists and one goal for the Bulldogs (2-0) and Mary Kelly added three assists and one goal.
Central Iowa United (0-2) lost to Marshalltown on Thursday. The host Bobcats scored both of their goals in the first half.
Kenya Gomez Reyes and Millie Heinemann scored the goals for Marshalltown, which improved to 2-0 on the season.
