Marshalltown edges Newton girls in soccer opener

Bobcats convert only goal with first-half free kick

MARSHALLTOWN — A free kick just outside the goalie box in the first half was all Marshalltown needed to down the Newton girls’ soccer team on Monday night.

The Cardinals were shut out in their season opener during a 1-0 loss to the Bobcats at Leonard Cole Field.

“Our girls gave every effort they could last night against Marshalltown,” Newton girls co-head soccer coach Victoria Jordan said. “It was not the outcome we wanted to start our season, but we must move forward. We have lots of games ahead of us.”

The free kick came after Newton was called for a questionable hand ball, according to Jordan.

Sara Huffman converted the free kick from about 30 yards out after she sent the ball high and just out of the reach of Newton goalie Natalie Freese.

The Cardinals placed six shots on goal in each half.

“We had some nice shots on goal early in the first half but was unable to get them in the back of the net,” Jordan said.

The Newton junior varsity squad downed the Bobcats 10-0.
