DES MOINES — Lauryn Garrett, Ella Swarts, Olivia Hotchkin, Madison Rinehart and Roxanna Almazan were all part of two wins during the Newton girls’ tennis team’s season-opening victory against Des Moines East on Monday.
The Cardinals swept the Scarlets 11-0 and won all 11 matches in single sets.
No. 1 Garrett and No. 5 Almazan both won their singles matches 8-0, No. 3 Hotchkin and No. 4 Rinehart were 8-2 winners and No. 2 Swarts won her match 8-5. Avery Potter got the other singles win in the No. 6 spot, claiming an 8-1 victory.

Izzy Lane and Brooklyn Sterling won 8-0 at No. 5 doubles to lead the way. Garrett and Paige Benson won their No. 2 doubles match 8-1 and Rinehart and Sloan Brodersen were 8-2 winners at No. 3 doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, Swarts and Hotchin were 8-4 winners and Almazan and Emily Wermager won 8-3 at No. 4 doubles.
The Newton junior varsity team defeated Des Moines East 6-2.
