Colfax-Mingo boys fall three times in SICL play

Tigerhawks can’t hold narrow halftime lead against Iowa Valley

COLFAX — In search of its first win of the season, Colfax-Mingo’s boys basketball team held a three-point lead at halftime against Iowa Valley on Thursday.

Unfortunately, the Tigers rallied in the third quarter and finished off their hosts with a big fourth during a 63-49 win in South Iowa Cedar League play.

The Tigerhawks out-rebounded Iowa Valley 33-27 and made 9-of-28 from 3-point range.

Colfax-Mingo led 17-16 after one quarter and outscored the Tigers 18-16 in the second. Iowa Valley rallied with a 15-9 third and then dominated 16-5 in the fourth.

Harrison Rhone had 18 points, three rebounds and two assists and Carter Gibson posted 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

Cael Bracewell chipped in 12 points, two rebounds, six assists and two steals and Jared Lewis finished with nine points, two rebounds and two steals.

Brandon Kite grabbed three rebounds and Kale Wilwerding, Kaden Dalton and Elias Hostetter each grabbed two boards. Wilwerding swiped two steals and Hostetter dished out two assists.

The Tigerhawks (0-18 overall, 0-14 in the SICL) shot 33.3 percent from the floor and committed 17 turnovers.

Caleb Haack posted 31 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks and Evan Kearney added 20 points, six rebounds, seven assists and five steals. The Tigers (6-10, 6-8) shot 47 percent from the floor, connected on 15-of-20 from the foul line and committed 15 turnovers.

Montezuma 72, Colfax-Mingo 36

Gibson registered another double-double, but the Tigerhawks couldn’t overcome 20 turnovers and a 1-of-11 night from long range.

Montezuma controlled the middle two quarters and downed Colfax-Mingo 72-36 during an SICL contest on Tuesday.

Gibson led the way with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Rhone added 13 points and three boards.

The Braves (13-3, 11-3) led 16-11 after one and outscored the Tigerhawks 16-12 in the fourth. But the visitors pulled away with a 16-3 advantage in the second and a 24-10 surplus in the third.

Bracewell finished with three points, four assists, two rebounds and two steals, Lewis chipped in six points and three boards and Hostetter added three rebounds and two assists.

Konner Dalton grabbed four rebounds, Kite pulled down three boards and Wilwerding swiped two steals.

The Tigerhawks shot 34 percent from the floor and were 3-of-5 from the foul line.

Garrett Watts had 18 points and six boards and Owen Cook tallied 11 points and six rebounds. Montezuma, which improved to 16-0 all-time against Colfax-Mingo, shot 49 percent from the floor, made 10-of-28 from 3 and turned the ball over only seven times.

HLV 67, Colfax-Mingo 44

VICTOR — Colfax-Mingo’s defense improved in the second half, but a 40-point first half by HLV was too much for the Tigerhawks to overcome during a 67-44 road loss on Friday.

Colfax-Mingo trailed 20-11 after one and the Warriors won the second 20-10. The Tigerhawks lost the second half 27-23.

Bracewell led the Tigerhawks with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists and Rhone added 10 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Hostetter added seven points, four boards and two assists, Konner Dalton chipped in five points and two boards and Lewis collected three points, two rebounds and two assists.

Wilwerding registered three points and three boards, Gibson and Kite each pulled down four rebounds and Kaden Dalton grabbed two boards.

The Tigerhawks shot 35 percent from the floor, connected on 9-of-27 from 3 and made only 3-of-9 from the foul line. They turned the ball over 18 times.

HLV (7-11, 6-9) shot 42 percent from the floor, hit 8-of-25 from 3 and sunk 7-of-11 from the foul line. The Warriors out-rebounded C-M 38-31 and committed only seven turnovers.

Landon Hall led the Warriors with 25 points, nine rebounds and seven steals and Peyton Roth added 19 points, four assists and five steals. Jack Cheney grabbed 12 boards.
