L-S boys rebound from first loss, rout HLV

Hawks can’t hold lead in road loss to Montezuma

SULLY — The Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the season with a convincing home win over HLV on Tuesday night.

The Hawks used a dominant third quarter to dispatch the Warriors for good and held their visitors to 25 percent shooting during a 59-29 win in South Iowa Cedar League play.

L-S led 14-9 after one quarter and went in front 27-17 at halftime. The Hawks dominated the third 20-4 and went on to win by 30.

“We played sharp in the third quarter. The guys moved the ball with a purpose,” L-S head boys basketball coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We also played tough defense that quarter. Hopefully, we can continue to build on that quality play.”

Four Hawks scored in double figures, led by Conner Maston’s 14 points and five rebounds.

Klayton Van Dyke had 10 points and 12 rebounds, Mitchell Miller tallied 12 points and six boards and Preston Rodibaugh finished with 12 points, two rebounds and five assists.

Corder Noun Harder posted three points, seven assists and three steals and the Hawks’ bench production included five points and three rebounds from Dawson James, two rebounds and three assists from Lucas Sieck, four rebounds from Carson Maston and a pair of boards from Blake Van Wyk.

The Class 1A No. 8 Hawks (16-1 overall, 13-1 in the SICL) shot 42 percent from the floor, connected on 6-of-17 from 3-point range and out-rebounded HLV 41-25. They committed only seven turnovers and held a 13-2 advantage in second-chance points.

Devon Weisskopf led HLV (6-11, 5-9) with 10 points and five rebounds. The Warriors shot just 25 percent from the floor, made 2-of-19 from 3 and turned the ball over 13 times.

Montezuma 84, Lynnville-Sully 74

MONTEZUMA — Rodibaugh and Van Dyke each posted double-doubles, but it wasn’t enough as Montezuma rallied with a big fourth quarter during an 84-74 home win on Friday night.

The Braves handed the Hawks their first loss of the season after dominating the fourth quarter, 34-15.

“We played well in stretches but couldn’t sustain it,” Harthoorn said. “We had trouble slowing down Montezuma’s offense. It will be important for us to learn from this game and respond in a positive manner. I trust this team will do that.”

L-S led 25-16 after one and each team traded 23-11 advantages in the second and third quarters. The Hawks trailed by three at halftime but led by nine after three.

Rodibaugh registered a season-high 24 points, a career-best 11 rebounds and two assists, while Van Dyke added 18 points, 10 boards and three blocks.

Miller chipped in 11 points and five rebounds, Noun Harder finished with nine points, three rebounds and eight assists and Conner Maston tallied five points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

James added five points and three boards off the bench.

The Hawks shot 46.6 percent from the floor, made 9-of-30 from 3 and connected on 11-of-18 from the foul line. They committed nine turnovers and out-rebounded Montezuma 42-27.

The Braves (13-3, 11-3) made 13-of-23 from 3 and buried 17-of-22 from the foul line. They committed eight turnovers.

Garrett Watts registered 30 points and nine boards, Gavin Strong added 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists, Brady Boulton scored 19 points and Masin Shearer put in 14 points.
