Cardinal boys bounce back with back-to-back wins

Newton gets seventh win after double-digit victory over Grinnell

GRINNELL — The Newton boys basketball team was not at its best offensively on Friday during a Little Hawkeye Conference game against Grinnell.

But the Cardinals held the Tigers scoreless for the first 12 minutes and used a big second half to post a 42-24 victory.

Newton led 9-0 after one quarter, outscored the Tigers 26-16 in the second half and started another win streak after losing to Norwalk last week. Grinnell fell to 5-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

No Cardinal scored in double figures, but Brody Bauer had seven points, two rebounds, two assists and four steals and Ian Reynolds posted eight points and three rebounds off the bench.

Cole Plowman tallied five points, seven boards and three blocks, Drew Thompson registered six points, two assists and two blocks and Jake Ingle finished with five points, two rebounds and two assists. Carson Satterfield added four points and two assists.

The Cardinals got significant production from their bench. Besides Reynolds, Tade Vanderlaan also collected five points, five boards and two assists, Nate Lampe grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists, Kacey Sommars grabbed three rebounds and Caleb Mattes corralled two boards.

Newton (7-3 overall, 5-2 in the conference) shot 38 percent from the floor, connected on 3-of-20 from 3-point range and hit 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. The Cardinals only turned the ball over 13 times.

Newton 69, Nevada 45

NEVADA — Plowman tallied a double-double, the Cardinals buried 11 3-pointers and Newton used a big second half to down host Nevada on Thursday night.

The Cardinals led by five at halftime but dominated the final two quarters during a 69-45 win in non-conference play.

Plowman finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, four steals and three blocks and Bauer added 16 points, seven boards and three assists to lead the Cardinals.

Newton trailed 9-8 after one. The Cardinals outscored the Cubs (8-3) 14-8 in the second and had a 47-28 advantage in the second half.

The Cardinals shot 43 percent from the floor, connected on 11-of-29 from 3 and made 4-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Newton committed only six turnovers and registered 23 assists on its 27 field goals.

Bauer made 4-of-6 from long range, while Plowman was 2-of-4 and Satterfield connected on 2-of-3.

Satterfield finished with six points and five rebounds, Ingle had three points, five rebounds and five assists and Thompson finished with three points, two assists and two steals.

Lampe added eight points and four assists and Vanderlaan collected four rebounds and three assists off the bench. Reynolds chipped in six points and two rebounds and Sommars put in three points in reserve roles, too.
