Cardinal trio wins titles at West Marshall Trojan Tangle

Seven Newton girls compete in 12-team wrestling tournament

STATE CENTER — Seven Cardinals entered the 12-team West Marshall High School Girls Trojan Tangle on Tuesday night and three of them returned home with individual bracket titles.

Elizabeth Elliott, Stella Cupples and Abby Chance led the Newton girls wrestling team with first-place finishes. The Cardinal trio combined to go 9-0 with nine pins.

Cupples (12-3) was 4-0 at 120 pounds. She registered four pins and the final two were inside of 1 minute, 30 seconds.

Elliott (12-0) remained unbeaten on the season with a 2-0 record on Tuesday. She won twice by fall, including a 56-second pin.

Chance (7-3) grabbed the individual title at 155 after a 3-0 day. She won all three matches by fall, including the final two in 1:25 and 1:04.

Claire Breuer (135), Jessie Hutchinson (170), Grace Guy (170) and Ashlyn Van Manen (190) also competed for Newton. Breuer and Hutchinson both finished third, while Guy and Van Manen placed fourth.

Breuer was 2-1 in her 135-B bracket. The top three finishers in the field all finished with the same record.

Breuer defeated eventual champion Alyssa Kriegel of Grinnell 9-2 in their match. She also won a match by fall and her lone loss was an 8-3 decision.

Hutchinson (7-3) finished 2-2 in her 170-A bracket. She won twice by fall and lost twice by fall. She recorded a 9-second pin.

Guy was 1-3 with a win by pin in her 170-B bracket, while Van Manen finished 0-3 at 190-A.
