NORTH ENGLISH — A furious and valiant comeback fell short for the Colfax-Mingo boys basketball team on Thursday.
The Tigerhawks trailed by 15 at halftime but used a big fourth quarter to get back into the game before eventually falling 50-44 to English Valleys during South Iowa Cedar League cross-division action.
The Bears led 14-10 after one quarter and outscored the Hawks 15-4 in the second. They extended their lead by two points after three before the visitors won the fourth 18-7.
Harrison Rhone scored a career-high 21 points and Carter Gibson grabbed a career-best 16 rebounds in the loss.
Rhone added six rebounds and two steals, Gibson finished with seven points and four steals and Elias Hostetter registered three points, a career-high nine boards, two assists and four steals.
Cael Bracewell added seven points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals, Jared Lewis tallied three points and four rebounds, Brandon Kite and Kale Wilwerding grabbed two boards and Conner Wood dished out two assists.
The Tigerhawks (0-7 overall, 0-6 in the SICL) shot 21 percent from the floor, made 3-of-34 from 3-point range and connected on 10-of-18 from the free-throw line. They committed 11 turnovers.
English Valleys improved to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
