Baxter boys show off depth, set program scoring record against Meskwaki Settlement

Bolts hold Warriors to six points in home conference victory

BAXTER — A season-best field-goal percentage led the Baxter boys basketball team to the single-game program scoring record on Tuesday night.

The Bolts led 42-0 after one quarter, went into the locker room up 65-0 and hammered Meskwaki Settlement School 101-6 during Iowa Star Conference South Division play.

Thirteen players scored in all as the Bolts shot 60 percent from the floor and committed only seven turnovers.

“The scoring record means nothing to me,” Baxter head boys basketball coach Zach Hasselbrink said. “I’m a defensive coach who emphasizes transition. This was not the type of game I wanted. I respect Coach Bear and all he has accomplished at Meskwaki.”

Carson Scroggins led the Bolts with 22 points, five rebounds, seven assists and five steals and Treyton Travis added 14 points, three rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Cael Shepley chipped in 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals, Cody Damman collected 11 points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists and Jake Travis had eight points, three rebounds, five steals and two assists off the bench. Trice Clapper chipped in four points and two steals.

The reserves were key in the win. Perrin Sulzle registered seven points, six rebounds and three steals, Stadan Vansice put in six points and grabbed two boards and Cainan Travis collected six points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists.

“I’m glad we have a full squad of team members who enter the court with intensity, effort and passion,” Hasselbrink said. “I’m proud of how our guys competed and feel our coaching staff subbed and planned the right way.”

Eli Dee also scored four points, Kolton Hill grabbed two boards and swiped two steals and Carter Smith pulled down four rebounds.

The Bolts (6-0 overall, 4-0 in the conference) were 3-of-10 from 3-point range and made 4-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Meskwaki Settlement (0-6, 0-5) was plagued by 49 turnovers.
